can chickens eat sunflower seeds??

Post Mon Jan 18, 2010 5:56 pm

Hello everyone.

I stumbled across a chicken feed supplier today :D (only 6 miles from my house, but never knew it existed!!) anyway- i asked for mixed corn and they gave me a bag with corn etc AND sunflower seeds, they say that chickens love them and they are good for their conditioning?? - its this right :? - am i being too suspicious..... i'm suspicious as they had never heard of limestone flour for soft shelled eggs or softies at all for that matter :? .

thanks
Veggiemad.

Hi veggiemad

My three love sunflower hearts, i take it that's what you was on about, my bantam Judy, it's her favourtie, she don't like the corn much, loves the hearts and the wild bird seed, they make me laugh when i go down to the shed where their food is, they all come running, wanting me to throw them something!

Give it a try

mine eat them but they don't waste time with the ones i grow due to the fact most of the seed is sterile so the seed case is empty

I have a leftover bag of cockateil seed that contains whole sunflower seeds and other seeds. They scoff it all and have been fine. I give them a handful as a treat now and again if I've run out of corn. :D

I mix them in there wet feed they love them any way they come, I only give them hearts though. :D

Mine have discovered "Goji berries" this week. I made the mistake of taking my breakfast outside to eat, and Princessa spotted the red things in my home made Muesli mix, shot up onto my chair arm and picked out every one. I ended up just putting the bowl on the ground for them and made myself another lot.

My three Pekins are CRAZY INSANE for sunflower seeds - in fact, it's the only treat they haven't eventually turned their fussy beaks up at.

Also, I remember reading somewhere that they're good for adding Omega 3, so a handful now and then can't really do any harm...

Over on the US forum someone posted a website with a recipe for feeding their girls whole grains...sunflower seed makes up a large percentage of the mix so I'm sure it is fine. check it out http://www.greenerpasturesfarm.com/Chic ... ecipe.html

I give my hens a similar mix of grains, as they won't eat any kind of chicken feed that I have bought for them. My oldest hens will be six this year and are healthy, strong, and glossy, they are still laying all through the spring and summer. I buy Omlet organic grain mix and add the millet, hemp, linseed, alfafa, chia, sunflower, grass seed, fennel and anything else that I see in the health food shop that takes my fancy. They have never refused to eat whole grains. I do worry sometimes that I am not doing the right thing by not giving them chicken feed, I am glad I am not the only one that feeds them as they would eat in the wild...... Except for the mealworm and pinenut treats, Oh! and muesli and yoghurt and bokashi. Thanks for the link Angels4. :D Very interesting reading. :D xx

Mine are always very interested when I'm filling up the wild bird seed feeders, and if I don't keep an eye on them, they try and peck the seed out of the little holes on the feeders when my back is turned. I gave them a handful of the mixed seed that includes sunflower seeds and they love it. I don't give it to them very often, but they really do like it as a treat.
