RIP Boo - End of an Era

Post Fri Apr 25, 2014 11:11 am

Hi

Boo was one of our original Omlet hens that we got in April 2007. For the last few years, we had been bringing Boo indoors (in a cat box) over cold winter nights and were pleased that we got her through another winter. The cold seemed to affect her joints and so we were still doing this.

Yesterday, she was slightly (but noticeably) slower at transferring from the over-night cat box to the run - but she gobbled down the tea spoon of corn that she always had as a treat. At about 11am I noticed she was by the glug, hunched up with her eyes closed. I got her out and cuddled her on my lap. I though she was dying and wanted it to be peaceful and in my arms. When OH returned, we phoned the vet and got appointment for 6.15 pm. We put her back in the cat box, in the utility room and I set up the web cam to watch her. She was drinking a lot of water but did also eat some dried meal worms. By 3.30, she looked to be dying. I didn't want the stress of the vet but had no idea how long she would last and so we phoned the vet. They said the vet was very busy (even double booked) but she would see her ASAP.

We were seen straight away. Boo perked up (but they do that ). On examination, her abdomen (?) had a load of stuff in it and her breathing was laboured and so we took the decision to have her PTS. The vet said that after death a lot of stuff came out of her mouth (not from her crop but lower down) - so nothing could have been done.

I know she had a good, long pampered life but I feel so sad to have lost her. I know we made the right decision and got her to the vet within hours of noticing she was ill but .....
People don't understand how you can get so attached to 'just a chicken'.

Gosh, that was a long lifespan, you must have looked after her well. I try not to get too attached to chickens but when you have one as long as that it's very hard not to. Sorry to hear about your loss.

Sorry to hear that H :( Sometimes its so hard, with the extra special boys and girls who get deeper into your affections than most, but when you are ready to come out the other side you will have lots of very good times and happy pictures and memories to look back on. RIP Boo.

Well done you for doing the bast for your girl and making that hard decision. If olly reads this, how on earth do you not get attached? I guess if you have lots to look after it's easier not to though.

Gosh, that was a long lifespan, you must have looked after her well.

They were/are pets - and pampered. They have good quality feed, treats, but only sensible ones in moderation. As pets, they do 'tricks' - like perching - this is Boo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmufRPfT9qY) - I think they like the attention !

I try not to get too attached to chickens

Difficult !

when you are ready to come out the other side you will have lots of very good times and happy pictures and memories to look back on

Thank you for reminding me of that.
I do get over attached and over upset when they go.

Thanks all, H

RIP little Boo. What a great little chicken. Loved the vid. Our oldest is now 6. Yet it doesn't seem that long with chooks. Lots of hugs for you.

Yes, she was a very special little girl - I should focus on the 7 years rather than the last day.

Ps I get ridiculously upset when I lose any of my pets X
