  10. Bizarre wildlife encounter yesterday... I was in my work van driving into Plymouth, approaching a large roundabout with about 6 lanes of traffic approaching traffic lights. People in front of me in my Lane kept leaving the lane for no reason that I could see, but when I got almost to the lights, in the middle of this busy road, was a sparrow hawk plucking a pigeon!! I got to within about 3 feet of it in the van and it just glared at me and then went back to it’s plucking!! I was about to do what everyone else had and go around it, but then I thought...’What if the next person doesn’t care about wildlife and just drives over it?’ So I put my high viz jacket on, turned on my flashing beacon and got out. I very nearly touched the hawk before it finally flew off looking very cross. Then I thought I’d better fling the dead pigeon to the side of the road in case the hawk came back, so I picked it up by the tail and felt it twitch (which was a bit grim), but flung it over the car next to me (hmmm - sorry to that person!) - and then as the pigeon got to the top of the arc - it flew!!!!! I hadn’t looked at it very carefully and actually thought it had no head!!! My face must’ve been a picture because all the people in cars around me were killing themselves laughing 😂

  11. I've started making my own reed diffusers. They're nice and easy if you have the pre-made base mix. I started after I found a really nice 'designer' one in a garden centre the other week which was *amazing* - but cost £28!! So I just started making my own for a third of the price! lol Well, here's the Peckingham Palace update. All built and ready. We re-used some of the panels of the MK1 run to create the enclosure at the front. And a nice big new hen house means that I'll be getting a few more hens too. Planning on collecting them this weekend. 🙈 🙈 🙈 😂

  12. This is Nellie. She just looks like a giant cupcake dusted with cocoa powder and icing sugar This is Peggy. I think she is the youngest. She is very calm. This is Dottie. I think she might be the oldest. She is also very calm. DS's friend asked if he could name one so he called her Dot but that is a bit too short so got changed to Dottie. This is Nancy. Such a pretty little thing. Th This one is Hazel. Also one of the youngest I think but just a teeny bit older than Peggy. They are all such cuties ❤️ They haven't really used the shelf in the guinea pig house but they do seem to like having a siesta under it so I'm going to leave it in there for now. And thank you to my DS who took all the photos for me.

  13. I want to get some dart frogs too... but I think I've been banned from buying anymore pets. Well, there's no frog pics yet - but I have completely re-done their tank to make it much more naturalistic. I made vines and all. And I also made it bioactive (which means it is self-sustaining and I don't have to clean anything save for wiping down the glass). I think it looks pretty good!

  25. Just picked up two new chickens. A 10 week old Sebright and an 11 week old Barnevelder. The Sebright is so tiny, she managed to squeeze through the run wire within 30 min and was in with the big ones and then out in the garden! Managed to scoop her up again and now fortified their part of the run with small gauge bird wire. She is a little cheeky hen! The barnevelder has some wonky toes, but has done well up till now, so figured she’ll be fine. Both are silver laced. No great photos yet, but they have retreated in their little rabbit hutch for now and have had a good little feed drink.

  28. - Feed (grower pellets to start with, layer pellets once they start coming into lay) - treats (no they don't need it, but hey we like to treat our selves too!) - Feeders (and sadly the Omlet ones are pretty useless - Drinkers (again, Omlet ones are just tooooo big) - Something for in the nest box (no hay/straw. I use woodchips) - Something on the run floor (forget grass, it won't last! Put the whole thing on paving slabs and fill the run with wood chips or aubiose if your run is absolutely dry) - A plan for worming chickens. (some do a worm count first, others worm every three months or so. And no, Verm-X isn't a wormer...) - Cat carrier (If you need to take a chicken to the vet, it's much more handy than a box) - comfy chair and a cup of tea (to watch the chickens!) I probably forgot something... But their will be others along shortly!

  29. OH got a call from our surgery yesterday at 3. 40pm as they had a spare dose and were ringing round. This is his second dose only 5 weeks after his first jab. Having been really rough with the first dose he has sailed through this one with only a sore arm (although it is, apparently, VERY sore and, from the amount of moaning, groaning and arm rubbing, may well fall off!)

  32. Well seeing as my Cafe is closed until May 🙄 I spent all of last week clearing the allotment and weeding. Just one bed a day to save any back issues but it’s 90% done and looks great. Had a bit of an issue with a resident who faces my allotment, telling others that mine was ‘disgusting’🤬 - it wasn’t disgusting, just an allotment over winter.... she gave me lots of plants to put at the front facing her house when I started the plot to make it pretty for her. I applied to swap with another plot holder but the parish council said no. Because they can. No reason given except it’s ‘against the rules’ - a copy of which I have and nothing in there says you can’t swap plots. So....I’ve dug out all of the plants she gave me, and found good homes for them. I didn’t really want that many flowers (of her choosing) on the plot anyway. I’ve put up a massive bean wigwam at the front, along with my artichokes and sweetcorn that I’ll be planting there, I’ll have a lovely tall, green privacy screen to stop nosy, interfering neighbours. 😀😀 I finally managed to pick up some greenhouse shading and clips, which only took 10 minutes to do. So much better than the white fleece and tape ive been battling with for 4 years 😂 Another plot holder gave up his plot and told me to take anything i wanted. Huge mistake 😂 I dug up a red gooseberry bush, took his netted bed covers which are really solid, some plastic pipes to use as supports for enviromesh and a wooden table he’d made. I gave him lots of eggs as a thank you! I managed to get my kelvedon wonder peas planted, along with 2 types of beetroot. Plus pelleted autumn king carrots. So much easier to see the seeds when they are pelleted (and white)! £1.50 for 300 seeds so not bad at all. And spaced properly! Lots of work there last week has paid off. I just hope that when I’m back to work at the Café I can keep it up. I plan to get home, feed the dog and head straight down there most days. It’s only a 5 minute walk and if I get into the habit of going straight down when I finish work it will become second nature. I do love spending time down there.

  34. Thanks for your help and advice. That's exactly what has been going around in my head is that the bullies need to go as I didnt want that behaviour passed on. I managed to find a great home for the rhode rock and speckledy at a stables with other hens and a cockerel to keep their behaviour in check. I also got three new POL's on Saturday to go with my 10 month old RIRxLS. She has gone from being the victim of nasty ganging up and attacks at the bottom to being top of the pecking order with 3 youngsters to keep in on their toes. So far she seems glad of the new company and change of dynamics. There has been a bit of chasing and pecking while they all establish their new order but nothing nasty and continuous and all in all seem to be settling rather well. The new girls are 2x Sussex and 1x Medicis.

  38. I have a couple of blackcurrant bushes at the plot Daphne and they produce really well. Been in for 5 years now and I had kilos of berries last year! Ok, so I left the well known airline I worked for (20+ years) in September and took a pittance in voluntary redundancy! At the end of September I opened a Cafe in my village!! It was going really well until the November lock down, great in December and then we had the Boxing Day lock down so I’m closed again. Probably won’t be allowed to reopen until March I believe, but we’ll see what happens? it’s hard work, but only a 2 minute walk from home and I love it!!

  47. Happy Wedding Day to your daughter Valkyrie! I feel sorry for your son though, that's a real shame. Its certainly a very weird world, but I am trying to just go with the flow. My OH gets very irate, but I have been through that once with another political thing recently, and I am now trying to practise a more Zen-like calm and accept things more, as being furious hurts me more than anybody else. Its probably easier for me as I'm not trying to hold down/onto a job as well as a life. But there are some things I think are positives, perhaps we think a bit more and don't just rush headlong into things and purchases because that's just what we do under usual societal expectations and with no time, and personally I am valuing interaction with my friends and family more, although its mostly virtual. Don't get me wrong, I know a lot of terrible decisions are being made and unfairnesses continue, but I'm not sure anybody in Europe has got it right yet. I have a UK nursing friend who is in an official covid cluster through work, and Portuguese friends rang last night to say she (police) has tested positive, and he is waiting (university). Yesterday it was announced that 70% of the country is in partial lockdown as of 4th (so people/business can prepare), but its like the UK's Tier 2 except you have to work from home, and will last a fortnight, so its not going to do any good, and I suspect they will have to tighten things further. Being Portugal, one of the measures is that shops have to shut at 10pm! If all else fails I am off to eat a cushion....that made me laugh!

  48. To be honest in this situation, I'm not sure which is the best option - being able to hear or being deaf. Of the 2, I would pick being able to hear over being deaf. Sadly we just have to put up with noise and neighbours we find irritating. People are entitled to their own opinions as indeed they are entitled to have what they like in their gardens. Like Cat tails, I have tinnitus and sometimes the noise in my ears is awful and certain outdoor noises make my ears ache and I can't stand some noises. But right now, life is too short and there are more important things to worry about.
