  2. Good evening everyone!. Does anyone know if you can take hens to france?!!, we are about to start a grand new adventure, doing the "good life" in france!! gulp!, and im not sure where to find this information, as it would be a shame to leave the girls behind, any help would be appresiated
  3. Ithink you"ll be fine, you should see my girls after our next door neighbour gives them spagettii and stuff, they walk about looking very "busty"!!! for the day,
  4. I just love my days off when i can spend some time with the girls, and as you say Poet, they do love a chat!!! , im joined by at least two when im trying to clean the coop, Pugsley has to walk around the top edge and direct proceedings and when the straw goes in it becomes a race as to which hen can scuff it all out the fastest
  5. Oh congrats from me too!! nice to have another hants hen keeper!! .Glad the girls are all well, they will calm down soon . Ive told the guys in the pub about using worldwide poultry as they want to get 6 more to add to the flock!!

  8. would love to, but at the moment rather a dunce when it comes to computers , hoping when clever cousin is down for xmas he can teach me!!!
  9. I;d just like to add that yesterday we,(and i do mean we, the oh was well excited) decorated the hen house , its got a real 14 ft long swag going around the roof, battery operated blue lights, baubles, ribbon, and 5 cardboard cutout stockings in festive colours!!!!! , do i get the award for being the daftest member!!!, have to say it makes folks smile when they walk by, now thats the spirit of xmas . Best reward was Buffy laid her first egg this morning!!!
  10. i use loads of dried mealworms for my girls, they go bonkers for them! and they are good mixed up in their mash as well.
  11. So whos had christmas cards with " to so and so and the Girls"!! , I dont have kids but have a "family"
  12. Just wanted to say sorry too , heres me living in the country not far from you, and you get the fox !!, again foxwatch is good and i"d only let them out when you could be with them.
  13. Cant see that there would be a problem, you have enough room. We had 6 hives and lots of chickens when i was growing up and dont remember anything untowards happening ,do remember one hen that stood on the landing pad of the hive , but i think her and the bees soon got fed up with each other!!!
  14. In the spring they will get all the girls tested for salmonella, they have to do that befor they could use them for the diners, none are laying at the moment , but untill then we are all having fun helping them look afer them , 11 hen and one very proud cockeral
  15. when Pugsley was poorly i gave her, well all of the girls really, some un-dyed maggots(from a fishing shop) mixed with "live" yogurt, they all loved them and pugs was much brighter the next day.
  16. its been great, chelsea, have been "chicken sitting" for 3 weeks while the landlords being on hols, seems rude to go by withouy popping in
  17. Thought you would all have a smile at this! , the pub next to us got two new hens yesterday! an appenzella, in silver, and a lovely wyndotte in gold, from Wernlas, well they arrived with fancy bumper bits with threw the lads in a bit of a panic as they"d never seen anything like them and couldnt remove them , we went in after work and showed them what to do( one chef had never handled a live hen before ) , had a drink on the house , then conversation turned into naming the girls, well, the whole place got involved, all the diners as well as the locals , eventually the were named, wyndotte= Grouse, after the whiskey, and appenzella=OSH(oshe) after the beer, old speckled hen!!! , and their light sussex from the last shopping trip=Fuggle, after the local beer, fuggle-de dum!! . what a fun evening.
  18. Evening all,the hotel down the road from me has a flock of hens that free range in the grounds, i popped in to be nosy one day and they"ve got these neat feeders suspended from trees, i think they are from the phesant breeders, teardropped shaped with a t_bar at the bottom that they peck at and it just lets a few pellets out at a time , funny watching an orpington pecking but being beaten to the food by a cheeky bantie . would save on wasted food if the hens would learn.
  19. Oh dear, seemed to have caused a bit of a ruc on here, , rest assured poet no rats we"re harmed in the foamsquirting as it hardens really fast, in a couple of minutes really, it just bungs up the hole that they we"re using at that time!!!.The "fun" bit was the action of filling it up and me thinking of mr rat going""Ooops, word censored!"!!!, got to dig yet another flippin hole" which they do overnight judging by the excavations around the compost bin!
  20. Agree it a bit pricey,( but fun anyhow!), love to use an air gun but as my girls are right next to the road and with only a 3 ft wall, then the netting i think some of the folks would get a tad "excited" walking by and seeing me "poised" for action ,
  21. Igot mine from B&Qs, only problem is trying to reuse it as the nozzles got all filled up , must be quicker at washing it out!!. dear beloved says that they"ll just dig another hole, true, but its going to be like dot to dot!, eventually it"ll all join up and the garage will be totally sealed!!!! : . I know womans logic
  22. i just have to say this sites brill!!!, im sitting here crying with laughter reading these posts, seeing in my minds eye folks in pjs, crocs, dressinggowns crashing into wheelbarrows, slipping in poo, bleeding and scar faced, all at crack sparrow , and we"re all sensible members of society!!! pure magic
  23. Yep, got rats here too , on going battle with them, got a bait box and the little swines have made a home underneath it , they are under the garage as well and i have great delight in filling the holes with that expanding foam . Itake the food in every night and if i can see i dig over and bury and spills.
  24. Good evening, love the name!!. my girls are on bark, granted they are not in a run as such, but confined to a section of the garden, the bark does get worked into the ground, by me digging it in or the girls i find that it do"snt seem to get to " muddy" in there with it, and i do top it up at times. At the mo theres more leaves than anything else in there from the huge beech trees over the road. You may smile to know that theres a hen in our pubs flock called pollo!!.
  25. Never kept them but where i used to work they had about 5 as guards, and boy do they make a row!!, also are very indapendant and will roost up in trees, impossible to catch too
