    Freshly Laid Egg
  1. Hi, One of my quail was attacked by another and half of her face was missing under a thick layer of blood. I tended to her and didn’t notice anything else out of the ordinary. I sprayed her with the purple dye and put her back. A couple of days later and I noticed the top of her beak where her nostrils are was very raised, it reminded me of a budgie but it is comparatively much more prominent. That was now a couple of weeks ago and it’s still the same and she doesn’t seem to have any difficulties but I’m pretty sure it’s not normal. Any advice or experience would be appreciated.
  2. Hi, I bought 5 coturnix quail that should now be about 7-10 weeks old I think. In a couple of weeks I’ve had one half hard egg and nothing since. I witnessed some mounting which I hoped was female domination tactics. They seem to all get on otherwise. I’ve just tried sexing them. Two had quite wide open gaps, two had quite fleshy closed gaps and the fifth produced a brown foam when pressed. What do you think? Could they all still be girls? Theyre supposed to be pets, I wanted 5, I don’t want to eat fertilised eggs and I made a point of them assuring me of genders. I’m a bit irritated 😠
  3. Thanks for the replies. I’ll get the some hidey places. I went out last night to close the coop and they were snoozing in the run! Not a walk in so I was on my hands and knees in the dark and wet trying to shoo them in. I think I like them, but they seem so unpredictable so far. I’ve had these since Sunday, could I add a couple more to them from the same breeder? Same age etc. Trying to up my chances of eggs.
  4. Hi, I’m new to quail and bought 3 girls at approx 8-10 weeks old. They’re in a classic Eglu with run. I’ve had them a few days and still no eggs. Can they hold on to them if nervous? At first they seemed quite tame but they seem to be getting more and more anxious of me. Can they be tamed from this age and how might I do it? What should I give them to do? The run is like a huge expanse of nothingness compared to their size. I found them as active and adventurous since I got them in the rain today. Do they like rain/water? Any other personality quirks about quail that might be unexpected? Good or bad. Thanks
