  1. Thought this might be of use to some of you if considering buying from ebay.... I recently saw a bargain on buy it now but it would have been an 8 hour round trip to pick it up. I found http://www.shiply.com. Great website - You put the details of the delivery needed on and couriers bid to get the work. I used a fantastic company called pronto and had the eglu delivered from London to Leeds for £46 (most other websites had quoted between £100-£200) within 2 days. Would highly recommend them if anyone needs anything delivering.

    Questions about soft eggs

Funny, mine only ever lay soft eggs on the bars too. I bought a cat carrier for the WIR and now none of the girls will lay in the eglu...they prefer the cat carrier But...we have had 3 soft shell eggs now spaced over 3 weeks and they are always laid on the bars
  3. Mine certainly love it... Though I didnt really get a choice...2 days in they destroyed my vegetable patch that was before I thought to make a fence

    Waiting and waiting....

Have you made a complaint to the courier?? That is totally unacceptable, especially for live animals!! What a nightmare for you!! Really glad they have all arrived safe and well though!!
  5. Mines for the mite....I was told 7 days for mine...hope thats right
  6. I was nearly in tears...how sad is that???
  7. Its horrible isnt it....I did that last week - had a pile of eggs that I could only bring myself to throw away on day 7!!! To make matters worse two of my girls started laying during the withdrawal period and I had to throw their 1st eggs away

They Set Upon My Poor Girl :-(

awwww, poor Tawny! I really hope she picks up!!
  9. That was th ebit I was worried about when I put them into the eglu/ It comes as one piece that bit and I have never tried getting it apart. There is a big cosy gap there for themt hough Hi, hope things are looking better today - fingers crossed for you... I did manage to get the eglu apart toady - needed 4 screws removing and 3 'hexagonal' headed bolts...problem was when I got it apart I noticed that it was hollow inside which I was slightly horrified about...hadnt realised that, thought it was solid plastic..mine is the Mark 1 though, things may have changed. Putting it back together was another issue altogether...one of the bolts cross threaded and after 1 hour I ended up having to 'saw' the head off...lots of fun today
  10. That was th ebit I was worried about when I put them into the eglu/ It comes as one piece that bit and I have never tried getting it apart. There is a big cosy gap there for themt hough I poured as much poultry shield down the side as I could and hope for the best really!! It is a really big gap!! I really hope you get yours sorted soon!! Im due to take it apart again tomorrow and give it the major clean again....so fingers crossed Thanks ANH, I will have another look tomorrow - I could only find the 2 screws on the sides!
  11. Sorry to hear about your problem!! Thank you for the warning!! Ive had red mite this week, only noticed when one of my girls got poorly. Im a bit worried too now as I have a Mark 1 eglu and when I have just been out to look mine is absolutly covered in those pin prick holes - all round the edges and on the roosting bars ridges too - hadnt even considered that they could be harbouring the mites... also...I cant work out how to get the nesting box away from the front 'wall' as there is a gap I cant get in to clean properly....Ive taken the only 2 screws I can see out but no joy!! Maybe the Mark 1 eglu wasnt sold as 'anti-mite' and had been adapted since....starting to wish I had just gone for the cheaper coop!
  12. oh, it gets worse.... My lovely bluebelle Jemima laid her first today.... So today I had 3 lovely eggs...and I can't eat a one of them Typical after a whole month of no eggs!!! It does seem to suggest that the red mite were causing the lack of eggs though.....as soon as we started treating we had 2 new layers...or maybe its just coincidence
  13. Hi everyone... I just wondered if anyone knew how long to withdraw the eggs when having used frontline (NOT LICENSED FOR POULTRY IN UK) spray? Thank you!!

    Dark Egg Laying Hybrid?

Ive got my eye on a French Wheaton Maran (thanks to rufusrooster ) They lay eggs that are chocolate brown... Just wish I had a cube!!
  15. We went to Temple Newsome Home Farm on Tuesday and there were goats, chickens and geese in the same pens..... Then my daughter excitedly announced that there was a sheep in one of the chicken coops.....I had my doubts but went to look (as you do) and sure enough there he was, stood eating the pellets out of a hanging feeder
  16. Probably best to leave them 7 days to be on the safe side I suppose....I've also just seen a post on another forum that said 5 days Im a bit upset as the day after they had the spray Samantha laid her very 1st egg...and I cant eat it

    Advice on breeds.......

As for child friendly I can certainly recommend Bluebelles and Warrens who were eating out of my kids hands straight away ....Our Light Sussex and Columbine are now friendly a month in but it certainly took more effort!! We also did the same with the eggs....tried to pick 4 girls that all laid different coloured eggs...reckoned it would be easier to tell who had laid what
  18. We paid £9 for ours a month ago - our Sussex and Columbine were £12 and our Bluebelle £15...all in the Yorkshire area!
  19. Thanks Plum I thought it was 7 days but wasn't 100% sure....I saw somewhere where it said 3 days but that seemed a little on the short side
  20. OK, Im starting to doubt that chickens actually lays eggs I have had my 3 girls a month now....and not 1 single egg Only had my Bluebelle a week and a half so I'll let her off!! I'm getting a bit worried now that I am doing something wrong!! I keep seeing all these "first egg posts" left by everyone (who, by the way, I think are being payed by omlet to trick me into thinking chickens actually lay eggs and make me buy more girls and shell out for that rather lovely cube ) I know there are loads of reasons what it could be..age/breed etc...but the waiting is killing me.....good job those girls are so damn cute
  21. We are doing a little better now.... Endora laid her first last week.....then we were struck down by the dreaded red mite Ive spent all evening last night and today trying to get rid of them....and at dinnertime Samantha said thank you with her very first egg 2 down...2 to go....
  22. Thanks redwing and Aint "Ooops, word censored!"ody here.... Ill have a look at the DIY store tomorrow...hadnt thought of treating them....I'll cost some different options up tomorrow and see which will be best They do look nice with the plastidip too!!
  23. I have the dreaded red mite in my eglu and the roosting bars seem to be the problem... I was going to look at the DIY store tomorrow to see if I could buy any kind of squared plastic 'tubing' to cut down and replace the bars.. Has anyone done this? And if so what did you use? Thanks for reading!!!
  24. Hi everyone... Getting a bit concerned about my Sussex and wondered if anyone had encountered the same thing? I posted a few days after I got her that she was constantly sat in the nesting box making a cooing noise...well, it seems to have got worse... We have had her for 1 month now and she should be around 22/23 weeks now. She hasnt laid as yet, isnt crouching and her comb is still pale pink. She seems very young to be broody - and I would have thought they became broody after they had come into lay... She just seems to sit most of the day, preferably on the nesting box if she gets chance. When shooed out she waits for me to leave and then returns. If we bring treats over she will join in but not as enthusiastically as the others - generally hangs back a bit. Also, when they are free-ranging she just goes and sits under one of the bushes. My Columbine has just started laying and for the last 3 days the sussex sits with her while she lays and then often sits on the egg when she has finished!! She seems to be eating and drinking (poultry tonic in the water), crop seems OK, was wormed 2 weeks ago and checked for lice....Also, other 3 seem in really good health. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated...just getting a little worried there is something wrong - and she is my 2 year olds favourite.... Thanks everyone for reading the very long ramble....
  25. Thank you aint "Ooops, word censored!"ody here!! I've had a read and ordered some diatom powder too... Really hope I get it sorted quickly enough
