  1. So sorry, know how hard it is. RIP Harry x
  2. So sorry Luvachicken. You did everything you could from her and it was obvious from your posts about her her much you loved her. She was lucky to have an owner as caring as you. Sleeptight Queenie x
  3. So sad, all someones son, husband, brother etc
  4. Like others double bagged and binned, although when my Cockerel died on Monday I just couldn't put him in the bin so took his body to the vets to be cremated. It cost me £7.50
  5. We have had rats in the past, put bait boxes down which are there permanently and poison blocks where the rats were tunnelling through (out of the way of the chickens of course). I bring the food in at night. It never crossed my mind to rehome the chickens. My neighbour had a rabbit and she had rats. Rats are always nearby its just that you never see them.
  6. I'd be happy to sign a petition. Couldnt agree more that fireworks should be restricted to organised displays only. Finn hates fireworks and spent Sunday evening curled nose to tail on my knee, which is fine but he is a husky cross malamute and weighs 32kg. There wre fireworks on Corrie last night and he was getting worried about those.
  7. Is she moulting or showing any signs of it. I've had a look at the video and I had an ex bat that did this when she was moulting. She was fine afterwards
  8. My pekins do this and some of them are about three or four so its not just a young bird thing. My big girls do it as well

    Go sober

I have signed up for Go Sober for the month of October, so no wine for a month. Its for a good cause, Macmillan nurses who do a fantastic job, wish me luck
  11. I found my lovely 3 year old brown sussex Rosa dead in the run this evening. She was fine this morning and had food in her crop so it was a complete shock to find her.She had been moulting for ages and had just about finished, the only sign of anything was a very slight prolapse, no other symptoms and she was a good weight. I think it was quick and hope she didn't suffer. RIP lovely girl, you will be missed
  12. I too have used the broomstick method, I don't have the wrist strength to do it the other way. At least your OH was able to do it and sounds like he got it spot on. There is always flapping, I tend to put the hen down on the floor somewhere quiet and leave her for a minute or so then go back to her. Its a horrible thing to have to do but unfortunately part of chicken keeping. I always find it upsetting.
  13. I think that Jack is the youngest and my elder two are still at home makes it a bit harder . I am closer too YS than the othet two, its him that looks after the girls when we go away. I shall miss him.
  14. YS off to Stafford on Sunday. Girlfriend of 3 years is stopping ovet Saturday night and we are dropping her her home on way to Stafford on Sunday. Not looking forward to it as is going to be emotional enough as it is.
  15. Could he be a touch anaemic, I had red mite in my banties coop and one of my girls was a bit off, got rid ofthe red nite and she is fine now. I'd keep him in for a couple of days, sometimes a bit of tlc really helps. My cockerel eats the same as the girls , layers pellets and has done so for years and he is fine. Hope he is ok
  16. Sorry about your little one Choo Chook. I lost a young girl yesterday about 17 weeks who showing signs of neurological problems. She was head twitching and had a droopy wing. The vet didn't think it was Mareks so we were treating for an ear infection and she haf just started anti inflammatories for her wing. I found her unable to get up yesterday the wing was so droopy it was stopping her walking and she kept falling over I shall certainly be looking up Lymphoid luecosis as I didn't feel my girl haf mareks. Hope your others are ok.
  17. They don't usually get forlorn. Have you checked her for mites, are her eyes and nose clear, is there any rattles when she breathes. It may be that she's being bullied but the peck7ng order is perfectly natural. Does she feel.l lighter than the others.Im sure someone will be along with more ideas
  18. My lot have gone the other way and have started laying like mad, we have been battling red mite all summer and finally seem to have got on top of it so maybe thats got something to do with it. I'm sure its only a temporary thing they are going through laying eggs.
  19. Glad she is better. I have a young bantam with a droopy wing. She is on antibiotics for a suspected ear infection so I am hoping she is just using the wing for balance rather than it bring the dreaded mareks.

    Ear infection

I think it may be neurological as one of her wings is drooping althoufh I don't think it is paralysed so hopefully not mareks. I shall finish the antibiotics and see how she is then, fingers crossed, wouldn't like to lose he as she is only young.
  21. I can only say what others have said but I am so sorry.
  22. I use buz busters powder, its brilliant stuff, you can actually see the dead mites in it. Definately kills the little blighters
  23. Does anyone have experience of chickens with an ear infection. I have a young leghorn bantam who has been off colour for a week or so, no obvious symptoms apart from flicking her head a lot. She is slightly off her food but will eat corn and is drinking ok. I took her to the vets today who could only think it might be an inner ear infection, she had had drops of invermectin on her neck and is on baytril for 5 days. The only odd thing is that she has a droopy wing on one side. There is no paralysis so hopefully not mareks, I wondered if she is using her wing to balance. Any thoughts
  24. I think chickens do greive in their own way. I had two little Nankin bantams that went everywhere together. Onw of them diex and the remaining one would go and look for her when thwy were let out to fr even though she lived with several other hens. It took a week or so before she stopped looking
