  1. Well I found out via sky news 🙄 that the company is furloughing most of us. Received my email 2 days later so I’m off officially until the 1st of June... and then only working 12 days that month.....so.... my allotment will be looking fabulous!! 😂😂 I’ve been going down every day this week so far...weeding and planting seeds in the greenhouse. It’s been really nice. I’ll need to eat the veg as I’ll be so poor come summer 🙄
  2. Managed to get 3 more wheel barrows of chippings laid before the pile ran dry. Tigerella tomato seeds planted and some calendula - just a couple of trays in the green house. Back to work today for 6 days but then have 11 days off. A quick trip to Germany with dad for 5 days but I’ll get some more seeds in at some point...
  3. Huge lover of Franchi seeds. Their borlotti beans are lovely and never had a problem with any of their squash/pumpkin seeds. Still eating the last few onions that cake from Dobbies. Samt remember the type -stur something? i spent 2 1/2 hours just doing the paths with wood chippings yesterday. Sadly they were piled high at the farthest point from my plot, but the wheel barrow helped 😉 Covered a large bed with cardboard, cut back half the autumn raspberries and pruned the blackcurrant bushes - a bit late but such is life. The crab apple I planted for my mum 5 years ago needs a decent prune, but I left my saw at home 🙄 Will do it this week. Really ought to paint the shed....purple I think this time? The water butts need moving (again) and one is pushing against the shed and has caused water damage. The last time I moved it, I fractured my wrist so will be extra careful this time. 🙄
  4. Well it’s that time of year again when I wish I’d spent more time tidying up last year!! I did sow a bed of rye grass to keep down weeds and act as green manure. Plus one bed was covered with plastic, but I have 7 beds full of weeds and practically no bark chippings left as paths....it’s going to be a slog getting it right again. Someone at the allotment has arranged a wood chipping delivery for us all to use...arrived yesterday so I need to get down there quickly before it’s all used. Sadly it’s at the other end of the allotment to me, but I have a new wheelbarrow to shift it. 😀👍🏻 Now, do I bust a gut and break my back getting it all in order on my 6 days off or take it slow and steady and get frustrated? 😂😂
  5. I’m down to 2 hens and thinking off getting 3 more in the spring. Mine are 2 years old, have never really moulted and lay an egg each nearly every day. Sometimes I wish they’d take a break 🙄
  6. Just be careful when ‘burping‘ her. Tip her up a bit, then stop, Little and often. You don’t want her to choke. Give it a couple of days and if no better I’d go to the vet. Goid luck
  7. I’m growing sungold and a mini plum (can’t remember the name) plus a heritage cheery type that a fellow plot holder gave me. All in the greenhouse as it’s new to me this year... the Heritage variety have dark marks around the stalks and are so sweet!! I usually make tomato sauce and freeze it and a couple of small jars of Nigella’s moon blush tomatoes- which I pop into sterilised jars and top up with olive oil.
  8. 3 bantams in a cube might be too few? Yes they huddle together at night but a cube is very large for 3 small chickens. Although insulated, i would probably opt for a classic Eglu and 2/3 metre run. I had 5 full sized chickens (2 were massive 😂) and 2 classic Eglus. They all slept in one Eglu at night. I didn’t ask the neighbours when I got mine. We’ve had problems with rats but that was caused by the neighbour’s rubble and messy garden, as the council rat man told him a when he put bait boxes down the lane. He saw my set up and explained to the neighbour that rats couldn’t get into my run, with weld mesh sides and a concrete base. 😂 Go for it! You’ll love them!!
  9. Congratulations Lewis!! That’s brilliant!! 😀😀
  10. Mine started moulding in October and started laying again last week! 10 eggs from one hen and 3 from the other but happy to be getting them again 😀
  11. It’s Glühwein GS 😉 Budapest has to be one of my favourite Christmas markets! I’m lucky that I travel all over Europe with work (way too much, but that’s the job 😂) but this year I didn’t get to see any apart from Edinburgh which is nice but not the same in the pouring rain! They are all very similar but I love it when it’s freezing cold. One of my favourites is Munich. A mug of Kinderpunsch (children’s mulled wine😂) and a wander around eating potato Rösti with apple purée! Then it’s started snowing. Heavenly.
  12. Dad is German and we sometimes did present opening on the 24th, even though we live in the UK. We weren’t allowed to open the ‘big’ present until Christmas morning though ;0) we then had to wait until after Christmas lunch to open the presents ynder the tree from friends and relatives...that lunch really dragged when I was little! 😂
  13. All done guys, thanks. Moved to the for sale section and username changed :0)
  14. Will do! Iucky that the boundary fence along side is sloes and brambles so i do get some protection from the marauding deer!
  15. It has been rabbit proofed but deer fencing is too expensive. I'm lucky that I have a corner plot. There is a huge hedge down one side plus I fence in the rest of the plot to stop the Terrier escaping. I'm lucky that the deer rarely come into my plot. They've had the chard, beetroot tops and kale but during the summer, everything else is left alone.....
  16. Correct DM. Think it takes up too much space on the server.
  17. I always leave the door open to the Eglu. I work away from home a couple of nights per week (I have a walk in run with roof) and the hens are fine. When it is really cold, I ask my neighbour to close the door but the Eglu is in a sheltered spot and the hens seem fine.
  18. My Jerusalem artichokes are still going strong, but it's looks like deer have discovered the kale Need to spend a few days at the lottie to get everything cleared up, but it's daunting. I'll get there....
  19. I pruned my black currants last week (2 months late ) Haven’t really had time or the energy to go to the Lottie this year. Have move time off in March so need to pull my finger out and start digging. The hens appreciated the kale I picked for them and I still have onions hanging up in the shed, which look ok.
  20. I've had my new speckledy hen for a couple of months. The eggs are always darker than the Sussex hybrid and two bluebelles. They always have specks on them...
  21. I *cough* never use lip balm, but have one in every pocket, bag, allotment shed, car etc. Usually the black chapstick, green 'Hallo Vera' tin but the BEST one is Nipple balm for lips by Dr Lipp. £9 a tube, but you need 1mm from the tube, it stays on for hours and one tube has lasted me 9+ months. It's in my waistcoat pocket for work as my lips really dry out when I'm flying (my job).
  22. I've only really been down to the lottie to harvest bits and bobs. I've covered the carrots in straw and fleece, taken the cages off the sprouts and cut down all the raspberry canes. One of the plot holders works at a mushroom farm, so gave me several bales of spent compost. That has all been spread around the raspberries and a couple of other beds for next year. I really need to repaint the shed, but running out of time and it's been so wet. Onions are all dry and stored in boxes in the conservatory. Beetroot in soil in boxes too, but not doing too well. I might roast, then freeze them. The deer that have raided the allotments have finally found my little corner plot and ate all my chard. The hens won't be happy this winter but I've covered it with plastic cloches and it's reshooting, so hopefully it'll be ok. The turnips and swedes weren't touched and are doing well. Parnsips (all 5 of them ) are ok! Need to plan for next year now *excitedly gets the seed catalogues out*
  23. If you email Matt@omlet.co.uk he might be able to help.
  24. It's done and the wrist is healing nicely thanks!
  25. I haven't posted for ages here, but I'm still crafty Managed to fracture my wrist (tint fracture, no plaster), but still managed to sew a quilt Here it is, not quite finished, but laid out, ready to pin together to quilt -
