  1. Have you performed this procedure before ? I’ve done it on a quail, but wouldn’t fancy doing it on a chook. I suppose purple spray is a good disinfectant, but if you’re wearing gloves, that should be adequate. Plus a clean of the area with cooled boiled water
  2. Mine are on both. You can’t even tell. I deep litter with straw. They free range all day. At the moment, due to the wonderful weather, there is mud everywhere. Chooks don’t seem to mind. Bed time is clean. I’m waiting for a dry spell to get rid of some of the mud!
  3. How’s it going. I bet your Isa’s are little witches. They won’t let anyone in their gang. You need 2 at least to introduce, and then do it very carefully. Do they free range, they will need lots of room, perhaps with the newbies enclosed to start with
  4. Dutch bantams are lovely. Do you have a local supplier. It’s a bit early in the year to buy pullets or growers. I started with Omlets own Ginger Rangers and the black ones (whatever they’re called) they were great. Hybrids are a bit more hardy and for the first year at least should lay through the winter. Depends what you want. None are guaranteed to be friendly. I had a Silkie for 7 years, she was very amiable
  5. Silkie eggs are normally white, but if she’s a cross, it could be
  6. It’s a boy. I’m so sorry for you. It’s got 4 toes and spurs. Also typical boy head
  7. Isn’t there an egg withdrawal period with ivermectin?
  8. Trouble is, if I get the faintest whiff that I can keep more animals I get very excited. However I knew really that this wasn’t possible.
  9. Can you really keep guinea pigs with chickens? How does this work? Do they have to have a separate part of the run?
  10. I agree with Leicester H. It’s not worth making yourself Ill over. Sounds like she’s having a lovely life. I have a beautiful little peking frizzle, she was very badly bullied. She ended up living with my quail. They’re adorable things
  11. I thought about that, but my girls would just scratch them all over the place. We have them on our beds and they love them
  12. Most of my hens and my 2 ducks free range. I have feeders on the outside of my WIR where some birds are kept in. This has become very muddy and slippy this year, I think because of the ducks. Does anyone have any ideas how to remedy this. I used straw once. This just gets sodden and trodden in. I’m so happy that the ducks free range and put themselves to bed that I don’t want to discourage them. Obviously unless I have to (DEFRA)
  13. I don’t think you need worry about either if your not in the country. I’ve seen a stoat here. I do live in the country and have a brook running through my garden. Had a baby duck taken once and a dying hen was helped on her way (both in stable). Never had a problem with them in omelet runs (only water rats)
  14. I had a huge toadstool/mushroom round one of my trees, the girls ignored it, until it died. It stank like dog poo, but they went mad for it
  15. Yes Mars I can agree with the laying in strange places. Mine have gone broody, but not too much. I couldn’t find one of them for about a week this year. When I did she was sitting on 12 non-fertile eggs
  16. Think the others are what Omlet would call Gingernut ranger, also have lots of other names ( Warrens, ISA Browns)
  17. Yep looks like the grey ones are barred rocks. The ginger ones look like columbaian blac tails ( fantastic layers ). Jury out on the others
  18. It’s a big YES from me. Can’t beat real flames, and modern log burners are so easy to clean out. Oh and the chooks love the ash
  19. So photobucket have decided that you can’t post photos on here as it’s 3rd part hosting, or something like that. Apparently you have to pay lots of money if you want to do this. What do we do now?
  20. Seems your having the same problem with photo bucket that I have. What do we do now?
  21. Yes, would get a terrier if you could guarantee it wouldn’t kill my chooks. Plus I am I guide dog volunteer (no bad habits). I think we need a harsh winter, as I said before.
