  1. I eat free range chicken, I get my ‘other’ meat products from a good local butcher who gets (some) of his meat direct from a farm about 30 miles away. I normally eat vegetarian when out, after quizzing the waitresses for ages about where the products have come from. I find it almost a challenge to see if they know anything about the product they sell. I’d love to have birds and pigs for the table, but we don’t have the room. I’d still like to experience what it’s like to cull a bird – just to see if I could. Is that wrong?
  2. Feel a bit silly asking this one but... Is there a Super Grub? In the descriptions of grubs under Classic and Cubes they state that they hold different amounts of food, but I've never seen a 'Super Grub' like you would a 'Super Glug'. More curious than anything else...
  3. I really dislike people that make such comments! I believe your mom has a great life (well it sounds great to me!!). I know several 'older' ladies that enjoy baking, aerobics, cycling, gardening, campaigning, sewing - oh the list is endless! I can't wait to retire to 'get a life'. You're mom sounds great. I love the sound of the pudding, but I'm still mastering cookies at the moment to move onto anything else!
  4. Mine is my white star (I think) Rose. She was chosen by the other half. I find her flighty, hard to pick up (I rarely do anyway) and doesn't even take sweetcorn if I'm holding the pot
  5. I use an 'under bed' storage container with a few holes poked in the bottom...without the lid Nice bright pink. My ladies perch on the sides of this too.
  6. It is very distressing when dog attacks happen. I know Tommy can be quite unfriendly if he's on lead, especially towards SBT's (he has been attacked a couple of times) but is fine off lead. I will always put him back on lead if I see other dogs are. I wish people would take more responsibility over their dogs & I wish 'some' dog owners would realise the difference between friendly play and aggressiveness!
  7. Ivy did the first time she got on it, but now they all jump up - it's quite funny watching them jostle for position
  8. Sorry to read this...an awful way to loose a flock Hope you had some help in sorting this... ((hugs))
  9. I’ve been worrying about my ladies being bored after being moved from grass to woodchip over Winter, so taking inspiration from here I made a swing over the weekend http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g379/LisaCora/Chooks/DSC_0040-1-2-1.jpg The photo shows Ivy, my top hen, having a swing as soon as it was put up. Its a bit blurred because I didn't want her to think I was spying on her ... She has now allowed the other two to join her
  10. All these pictures of Bantams! I hope I dont get struck down with morehens disease
  11. That is the cutest thing I've seen for a long while!! Congrats...
  12. I also thought the Cube was huge when I first put it up. I have a small garden and was thinking to myslef I'll never be able to keep hens again and burst into tears! OH told me to calm down and leave it up for a few days before I made any 'rash' decisions. Two days later I'd got used to it. Next day I bought a 1mtr extension. Within a week I have three hens
  13. Oh Teabag! I'm another stranger wishing you well - my thoughts are with you this morning. What an awful thing to have happened...Life is such a precious thing taken for granted by too many... Big (((((hugs))))) to you and your family. xx
  14. I think you're right...
  15. Subaru Forester here. 4 wheel drive, large lugage load (can fit a cube and run in ), reliable (touch wood), goes like stink.. Bit expensive to insure, but then, I do live in the Bronx
  16. Charge people for plastic bags. It’s simple. People will reuse them more then. I have a bag which folds into its own ‘cat faced’ pouch and clips on my bag. It’s never forgotten as it gets clipped back on my bag as soon as it’s emptied and is often admired by the check-out staff. I also make ‘morsebags’. Anyone else heard of them? Inspirational story, easy to make and I have about 3 or 4 of them. Some of the bags look so funky www.moresebags.com I always seem to have more ‘promotional’ cotton bags than what is required! I collect them constantly from fetes, recycling demos etc. There are always some in the car. Like the idea of re-useable fruit bags! I have been one of those people to leave all the fruit packaging at the tills. I’ve only done it a couple of times, and the last time I had other shopping to do. By the time I got home, the nectarines had bruised!
  17. The forum is killing me today with all the new chook pictures So cute...and I love your WIR too.
  18. So cute!! You must be very proud.
  19. They are so pretty! i especially like Snowy
  20. I've recently bought a red top fly trap. It hangs about 10 mtrs from the house, 5 mtrs from the Eglu (its as far away as can be!). Reading these posts, I'm now worried about smells...should I abandon all hope now and live with the flies? How bad will the smells be?
  21. I put straw in mine too! When I had the classic I used to put shredded paper in!
  22. Looks lovely! My lot are still not sure on the ladder...they tend to tentively start to walk down the ladder in the morning, get bored (or hungry) and fly the rest!
  23. I've been meaning to post about this for ages but everytime I get on the forum, by the time I've read all the other posts I'm interested in, my boss comes back in and I'm expected to work So, I have my shinney (new to me) cube and have my three chooks. When I first got them, I put food in the Grub and in an old style Peanut so they could all feed whilst sorting out their pecking order. It's all calm and lovely now, but all three ladies seem to eat only out of the Peanut! I'm a bit worried about when we go away for a couple of days later in the year (with no hen sitter). Will the Peanut hold enough food? And why don't they like the Grub?!
  24. Yes. I puchased my Cube from ebay about a month ago after selling my Classic. I think its a very early model but it's still fantastic Am looking to purchase the new end but as I bought an extension from Omlet (shhsss don't tell OH) I'm having to watch the pennies...can I have some money dust too??
  25. This looks great! I love seeing other peoples set-ups!
