  1. Well I'm really excited although on 'pins' as my pekin flock has started to lay. Must admit it was quite a surprise to discover our very first egg on Sunday afternoon (or at least Salmon's), have taken a pic but not fully found how to put it on forum yet! My oldest pekins are now 28 weeks old, but I feel like an expectant mum all over again, as I found my cuckoo pekin in some discomfort yesterday, having a wet and what looked like part-prolapsed vent, clucking loudly on the coop roof. By the time I'd found helpful advice on the forum and gone back to 'help' her out, the protruding tissue had disappeared back inside. So I'm checking even more frequently on my pekins for reassurance as I don't want anything to go awry. Salmon laid again yesterday, ooh sooo warm to hold against the cheek! Anyway we are so thrilled with our clever chooks, and today our third egg arrived, although not sure if it's Honey's or Speckles (the cuckoo). Just another seven to start laying now, all in good time. Quite a surprise to hear how noisy the pekins are when about to lay too! Amazed I am, gives me a wonderful feeling inside, Jx.
  2. Lolalayla - Glad that you will probably have an MRI now as it will show up any problems much better than an x-ray, and that you've been referred on to orthopedics is good. Hope you haven't got to wait too long for your appointments, but as others have said do take the painkillers regularly as you will get better effect from them. Take things gently, be kind to yourself, Jx. Welovemarmite - many thanks for your comments. I've been to the eye clinic today and had my eyes dilated again, but then had something they put on your eye to check the peripheries (retina for any signs of damage). It was quite uncomfortable so hope not to have that done again, anyway all is ok with my retina so I've just got to be careful and make sure I seek help if 'floaters' change or I see flashing lights/shadow area.
  3. Hi there, Well before getting my pekins I did actually ask both our neighbours on either side of our property if they had any objections to us having some bantams in our back garden. To my relief and delight they both said they'd be happy to see them about, and in fact one of our neighbours has since got their own hens. I did explain the type of breed I'd be getting and that I had no plans to have a cockerel. Also I did check our deeds, but as there are a number of other homes with poultry around us I didn't feel it necessary to make further checks. Both our immediate neighbours have three dogs, and apart from us only one other household in the ten nearest properties don't have dogs. So we are surrounded by barking/howling/clucking or crowing every day! I agree with Sparkysmum, you do what you feel comfortable with. Good luck, Jx.
