  1. I dont like the omlet roosting bars (and neither do our chickens) so I cover the base with bedding and then add 2 wooden "roosting bars". I usually find the ducks snuggled up in the bedding, along with the chickens who also dont like roosting. And occasionally (but not as infrequently as you might expect) I find them standing on the wooden bars! Crazy little girls.
  2. My 2 calls put themselves to bed with all the chickens in the cube whenever its really cold. I have a wooden ramp (the chickens hated the omlet ladder) and they seem to have no problem waddling up it!
  3. well I just wanted to update everyone... Lewis really came through in the end He's here at the moment (and has been here for hours!!) adding additional supports (so the roof doesn't dip in places) and adding an additional layer of roofing over the existing one. The additional layer of roofing alone comes to £200, so we agreed to split the cost, which I think is fair. Despite the difficult start, I am very impressed and I personally would have no problem recommending Lewis and Averies4U to others
  4. Thank you everyone for the support. I was starting to think I was being unreasonable I did email Lewis explaining everything I said here, and am waiting for his reply. I will keep you all posted.
  5. My two laid almost daily for a few months in summer. Beautiful little blue-tinted eggs!
  6. I'm usually more of an omlet forum lurker but I just had to post - I'm so angry and upset! Two months ago I bought a very expensive run from Averies4U. I also specially got it with a solid roof and guttering to keep my precious girls dry. Soon after the run was installed, I noticed a small leak. I didn't want to bother Lewis, so I asked my husband to have a look and see if he could fix it. Unfortunately however the leak got progressively worse and my husband said I need to contact them. So I emailed Lewis and explained that it leaked a tiny bit initially, but has got worse and worse and now I need buckets to stop the larger drips, and my 10 bags of aubiose bedding is completely wet through. I just got a reply from Lewis saying that I should have contacted him immediately and now, 2 months on, the run is "no longer [his] responsibility". I am so upset and don't know how I'm going to tell my husband! I assumed that Lewis would take pride in his work and his reputation and if, after only two months, one of his runs is clearly faulty, I assumed he would want to fix it. Now I have to tell my husband that the very expensive run I finally talked him into needs repairing! And I have no idea how to fix a roof that leaks everywhere! Can anybody help? Has anyone else had problems with leaking roofs? (added 11/1/13) NOTE: If you are considering a run from Averies4U, please read my update below about how Lewis really came through in the end.
  7. Thank you Zak and Redwing. They're definitely on my shopping list!!!
  8. aren't they? i think they might be on my national shopping list. if i can only work out exactly what they are...
  9. I came across this adorable picture ... http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://homepets.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/bantams-sitting-pretty-2-mo2.jpg%3Fw%3D450%26h%3D253&imgrefurl=http://projectplans.net/chicken-tractor-plans/pretty-chicken-coops/&usg=__jIvUOS-_W_bp6-ZvWNJZv1j3A4E=&h=253&w=450&sz=36&hl=en&start=2&sig2=taU3-pgKawRrjui3nE7vHQ&zoom=1&tbnid=_hudI6aDXzqbgM:&tbnh=140&tbnw=250&ei=L96gUOGAO4qohAfI5oCQBg&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dbantams%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DX%26tbo%3Dd%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D738%26tbs%3Dsimg:CAQSXhpcCxCo1NgEGgIIAgwLELCMpwgaNQozCAESDTw4MznUATLKAdUBywEaIPaHeHMIpWFWoqdk6Fap-3SJylr2mYKZUI09Paz9CXiLDAsQjq7-CBoKCggIARIEkuujFAw%26tbm%3Disch&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=256&vpy=165&dur=3144&hovh=168&hovw=300&tx=126&ty=188&sig=106340816255589448950&page=1&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0,i:52 does anyone know what breed these birds are?
  10. I've been using the deep litter method in my large WIR. It seems to be working well so far and the chickens and ducks love digging around in the bedding. Should I be using ground sanitizer or would this kill off all the good bugs that keep the litter stable and healthy? thanks x
  11. Is there anything wrong with growers eating layers and layers eating growers pellets/mash? All these different types of foods are getting confusing!
  12. I bought 2 little girl call ducks a while ago. One was always less inclined to quack than the other one, but they both definitely quacked. and LOUD. But the quieter one now never quacks. Does that mean she might be a boy? Is there a way to tell conclusively? Sorry - as you can see, I'm completely clueless when it comes to ducks!
  13. thanks Chubby Chook. they are adorable aren't they?
