  1. Well about an hour after I posted this she was gone. Poor girl
  2. Think she's beyond help. Not even sure she is conscious. Do they just slip away?
  3. thanks for all your replies. She is still going strong. She has been very perky actually. I took her to get drained again but I know soon that wont be possible anymore. Still at the moment she is comfortable and seems happy. Got another very ill chicken thou that went downhill over night. think her time has come
  4. Hi all, So yesterday I noticed one of the chickens was looking a bit odd. She was standing a little bit upright and had her head stuffed down inside her body. I gave her a look and she felt a bit light and had a slightly pooey bum. Then this morning she wont move, her eyes are closed and she wont open them. I cant get her to drink anything. shes totally out of it. I have put her in a cardboard box filled with clean straw and moved her inside the house. Its really not looking good. Anyone got any ideas? These are my first hens. we have had them for about 2 years. thanks
  5. It is a tumour vet drained a lot of fluid off and as she seems fine and is eating we can keep her till she goes downhill. I want to spoil her while shes here. What are good special treats? I have been giving them a baked potato warm on the very chilly mornings. Poor girl
  6. She does not feel hot. She seems normal except for the legs and big belly. Il take her to the vet tomorrow. I hope it's not that
  7. this sounds strange but I have noticed one chicken is standing with her legs quiet far apart. I've given her a feels and she feels quiet fat and squidgy. Is this something to worry about? She is not laying but seems fine otherwise. Has she just got a bit plump or could something be wrong? Thanks
  8. I have checked for worms and have been treating for it regularly. I have checked for red mite and no sign at all. They are on the same feed as always, just layers pellets, but I have bought some vitamin stuff for them. I also feed them left over veg and salad. Pretty sure its not egg eating no sign of that (unless I accidently drop and break an egg, then they eat it!) 2 of them are laying again. so maybe it was just a phase !
  9. Looks like they are not done yet. 2 eggs a day for the last few days. Was a bit worried they might be unwell but they seem fine. thanks for all the help
  10. I would never get rid of them. They are still so funny and entertaining. Even if our very noisy one gets us up at 5am everyday! We don't have space for more and they have their little group now so we will just let them free load haha. Might try and fing some other locals we could by eggs from thanks all
  11. I have giver them a feel but i'll give them another look. They must be coming up for 2 now. I hope at least one of them lays for a bit longer as we love having the yummy eggs also when everyone's hens stop laying as they get older, do you just keep them pottering around happily and go back to shop bought eggs?
  12. I have 3 rescue hens all of which have been brilliant layers since the they arrived. I have had them for 1 year and now suddenly i'm lucky to get one egg a day. One of them is moulting but the other 2 are the healthiest they have ever looked. Any ideas why? also before they stopped laying the eggs had gotten really big. could this be anything to do with it?
  13. That's an amazing set up! I just wish I had a garden big enough. What a nice big fun area for your ladies
  14. im really interested in the go up! the classic is great but its so long it only fits a few ways in the garden. think i might need to save up for it also constantly bending down to do anything with it on the floor. love to see more pics
  15. hi can i ask how you sound proofed your coop? my chickens are screaming at 5.40 at the moment. i am going to try the black out method too however they dont seem to care if its dark! naughty girls!
  16. So wit hthe arrival of some lovely weather and enjoying the chickens so much (except for a few days here and there where one of our girls will not stop screaming!) im thinking about expanding the flock! We currently have 3. i think i would like to increase to 5 and upgrade to the cube. The cube looks absolutly great and looks much easier to move than the classic. Also although its taller and a bit wider it looks more compact than the classic run? Please let me know if this seems right because with the long run we only have a couple of positions it can fit in the garden. Anyone got a few pics of there cube in situ? and any plus's or minus's about the cube? thanks
  17. i am having the same problem with my ex batt. i don't know what to do. i know she does it when she wants to lay and someone else is in the nesting box. but shes started doing it all the time no matter what! hoping to find a solution on here
  18. The neighbours say they can't hear them. But the house directly next door has been empty for months. Someone moving in soon to rent. But it's me she's annoying. I don't mind getting up and letting them out at 7 but sometimes I would like to be able to go back to bed for a bit. But the way she is I can't. My partner is getting really fed up with her too. I don't think I'm imagining how loud it is. Sounds like she's screaming. I guess maybe this is just normal for her.
  19. so i posted about one of our hens being really noisy. well its gotten worse. it starts as soon as she wakes up and carries on for at least 3hours. then i go to work and she could still be doing it i dont know. she is doing it all the time, if shes in the run or not, if there is loads of food and treats or not! i thought maybe it was ' i want to lay an egg and someone is in there already' but even after she has laid she is doing it. Im running out of ideas! ive checked for redmite, have not seen any signs of it but treated for it anyway. its getting so bad im thinking about giving her away to people who dont have neighbours or ears! i was told not to go to hear and fuss when she starts so i compleatly ignore them now but still it continues and its just getting worse. im dreading the summer when they wake up earlier and go to bed later
  20. Sorry to hear we are all in the same boat, but i dont feel as guilty now! also, when the summer rolls around (if ever!) im looking to completly landscape the garden to be chicken friendly but also attractive. does anyone have any tips for a chicken friendly garden? or have some photos of thir own gardens? id love to get inspired!
  21. Hi guys, In preperation for the winter, we set up the run with a good layer of windchip underfoot so the hens would not be on mud all winter! but due to the awful weather and then being stuck in the run alot its just turned inot a smelly slimy waterlogged mess! what can i do? the whole garden is waterlogged and muddy. i thought the wodd chips would be a good idea! not so sure now. what are you all doing in these very wet conditions?
  22. oh no! well i clean and dust the house with dematacus earth regular but il have a check. One of the hens does seem to have a sore tummy since its got muddy and wet, but thats not the one out all night Thanks
  23. So a couple of my hens have started coming out of their eglu really late at night when its dark. One of them just wont seem to go to bed. when she does wander in i have to run out and shut the door before she decides to wander out again. They have only started doing this very recently. before, as soon as it got dark they would be in bed and not come out. Any reason for this change?
  24. Thanks for all your replys! This morning they were quiet! so this morning before i went to work i gave them some treats. Yesterday when she were noisy i totally ignored them all. really hope i can continue and train them up. Thanks again all!
  25. Well the weekend we let them free range all day anyway. They are so silly and would rather stand out in a downpour and get soaked throu that stand in the covered run! Anyway this morning opened the iglu door at 7am so they can go in the run. Valerie sounded off constantly for nearly three hours! she seems to be a bit calmer now just as im off to work. But i did not cave! However. the toys and treats don't seem to interest her at all on her anymore. The other 2 hens silent and happy to peck about
