Small Car recomendations Please

Recommended Posts

Dont touch Fiats or Citrions as they are cheap and poor quality. Pegeout have the worst reputation of any car manufacturer and come out bottom o the poll every single year for customer service and problem cars.

If you want cheap but reliable cars with cheap parts opt for vauxhall or Ford Corsas and Fiesta are great (but can be slightly pricy on insurance for their size as they are typical young driver/boy racer cars.

If you want slightly more expensive, but better performace and build quality, longevity and resale value go for a volkswagon or slightly cheaper but basically the same thing Skoda as they are owned by Volkswagon anyway and use pretty much all the same parts and running gear.

My favourite small car is/was a Ford - I had to sell it when I got pregnant with Dan as I could hardly fit in it, and a baby seat definitely didn't go in it! My little black Puma was the best car I've ever had - fantastic to drive, plenty of gadgets and even had plenty of boot space. Just not much room on the back seat! 8)

I have a Citroen Saxo. It is a P reg and hasn't had any major problems (yet) but is doesn't have any umph and is really loud.

I have previously had a metro, fiesta, polo & golf (not all at the same time).

Andyman and I have decided when we get our next car it will be back to a golf or polo.

Ali I have had 3 Fiat Pandas - the old style and loved them all then I hit a roe deer and end of the last one so got a subaru justy - awful car - now I have a Toyota Yaris 1.4 diesel and gets over 60- mpg and only costs £35 for 1 years road tax as is green.

There is a toyota garage in elgin - mine was not new its an 03 and I have had it over 1 year now. You should go and have a look. I have the old style one.

I love my Ford Ka, it's nippy and easy to park and drive. It may not be so good if you need to transport a lot of stuff or people! Mine's nearly 6 and it's only this year that it's had any problems so I'm now starting to look at alternatives! Really love the look of the new Fiat 500 but think they're expensive for what they are.

I've had two Ford KAs and loved them both. fun to drive, nippy, parts are cheap, cheap tax and insurance, easy to park but poor crash rating :( However mine did develop a nasty fault - namely steering problem and I nearly ended up in the crash barrier at high speed. Ford didn't know what it was and even husband (first class mechanic) couldn't pinpoint it. A new costly new steering rack didn't solve the fault and so I rapidly got shot of it as I lost all confidence in it. Apart from that I never had any major problems with them.

Since July I have had a glorified glove box, which is a tardis within but has a boot no bigger than a cosmetic bag - my VW Lupo. This has to be the best small car I have had (and I have had and driven a few - micra, corsa, mini (old style), Peugeot 106, polo ). I adore my lupo - it is a 1.4, goes like stink, is economical, cheap to tax, fun to drive and has a superb crash rating. If they hadn't discontinued them and replaced them with the Fox, I would seriously consider having one after another. My current one is 6 yrs old but with only 37k on the clock (I'll soon change that). The spec of the Lupo is very high - think 25k passat trim - and this was why they replaced them with the cheaper spec Fox - they weren't making any money on them.

OH slates Renault and vauxhall and raves about Citroen saxos. Certainly the 2 girls at work who have had Renault Clios have had nothing but trouble with them (both X plates).

I agree with the previous comments about the Clio and the Peugeots dent as soon ans you look at them - we have had two 206's and they both looked like the advert where the guy in India smashes his car ito a wall and gets an elephant to sit on it to make it look like a 206!

One of them had a head gasket blow at 3 years old (45,000m), and the other had so many bits and pieces go wrong within the first year it was always in the garage and cost about £2000 to keep on the road. We had them both from new and were plased to see the back of them!

The 2 small cars we have now that we are extremely happy with are the Toyota Yaris (not the new model) and my youngest daughter has a Mini One which is lovely and a brilliant drive.

My OH drives a land rover and he calls my car a go-cart!!!:lol:

I went go-carting once and it feels just the same, very low and stuck to the road. I love going round corners! :D Mind you, I've got the sports suspension plus and it's a bit harsh on the old skeleton sometimes!

When Carl changes from driving his Defender to driving my Mini, he says he feels like his backside is dragging on the road :lol: - and I complain becuase I need a Stannah stairlift to even get in his Defender

Andrew! - the child seats match the interior because they are just grey - it's not as if I had to go to Banbury to get some specially

I did some driving in a friends Caterham about 10 years ago - great fun, very fast, clung to the road like mad but soooo bumpy.

Nahhh, I love my van to bits!

Just picked up a sporty Vectra as my courtesy car while the van is mended and it's pants.. I know, it's not a small car, so not really on topic, but I hate it already! the rear visibility is very poor, I can see that it would be easy to reverse over a child or similar. I like the all round vis in the Berlingo - like driving a greenhouse!

Hmmm - there is a bit of a car war & a bit of s"Ooops, word censored!"bery going on here. As long as it goes & gets you from A to B, who cares what it is! I don't like people who say this is rubbish, that is rubbish!

Emma.x

I disagree Emma - I think if you've had/have a car which is rubbish then you should be entitled to say so! There's nothing worse than a car with problems - because the likelihood is that it won't get you from A to B - I've had my share of breaking down in the middle of nowhere, in horizontal winds and rain....... and no breakdown cover because I could only just afford to run a car........

I also disagree - when I was in my 20's and the girls were babies my dad always encouraged me to buy the best car I could afford as he didn't want me breaking down with wee ones in the car - that was when I had my Clio's and they were very reliable.

Also, are you saying that if you, for example, won the lottery you would make do with any old car 'as long as it goes and gets you from A to B' - I wouldn't, I can think of several gorgeous and expensive cars I would buy :D

Most of us ask for recommendations when we buy a car...especially if splurging on a new one. I want to hear honest opinions....and if someone has had a bad experience...I would take it into account before buying.

There are plenty of dangerous rustbuckets on the road which are capable of getting the driver from a to b but which haven't got an MOT.
