Sans Shampoo haircare

Recommended Posts

Just to clarify, with the lime juice I use, I don't use it for grease, I use it as the acidity makes my hair all silky (and it also helps my scalp). I used to use vinegar for the same acidity purpose, but I got sick of the smell.

Ah, OK. Well, I found the vinegar helped last time, but as you say, the smell can get a bit much!

I found that oatmeal was good for really greasy spells, but the best place to brush it out is the garden, otherwise it gets a bit messy! Not so good in winter, either...

I still havent washed my hair yet. Its truly revolting, its stuck to my head already, but in a strange way its liberating. I went shopping yesterday and didnt buy a single bottle of shampoo or conditioner. I've got the kids and Phil doing it too! Its not too bad for him though as hes got a number 1 all over so he wont look any different :D

Men with really short hair don't seem to have any trouble at all. My OH just uses a SLS free shampoo once every 3 months.

It is a liberating feeling and I love the shower - so quick and no bottles to deal with. Also no smearing on the doors for me to clear up later. :D

Keep at it KeanieBean :D . I've been shampoo-free since the beginning of October (apart from one trip to a hairdressers I didn't know well where I couldn't bring myself to admit my shameful secret  ). My hair is still tending towards frizz but "Ooops, word censored!"ody's made negative comments and a few people have even commented favourably :D . Showers are so much easier now and I must have saved a fortune.

I'm still waiting for the silky lustrous locks, but I suspect they will never come :( . Till then, I have my straighteners for the worst bits  .

I have a confession to make.... I was sick of my scalp, and heard that coconut oil might help it. Well, there's no way that I'd be able to wash out coconut oil without shampoo. So... despite totally feeling like I'd given in, I slapped a load of coconut oil on for a couple of hours, then washed my hair with very mild shampoo (no SLS etc). I followed with lime juice and a splash of conditioner (as usual).

And.... my hair feels like bloomin' silk! I don't know how long it will take for the coconut to build up beyond what is just a light coating (that didn't fully wash out), but it is honestly the best it has ever looked/felt, either with or without shampoo.

Am going to have to try this coconut oil thing out, and then see what happens. I've just got to sort my damn scalp out, and hopefully not mess my hair up too much in the process. Although if it looks and feels like it does today, I will definitely stick with coconut oil and mild shampoo!!

I still feel like I've 'given in' though, which is a real shame. Especially since within the last couple of days I've really noticed less grease on my hairbrush etc, so my scalp was starting to normalise. Shame it wasn't getting less flakey though (it was worse than itching - it was stinging!).

I got a similar oil treatment as part of my LoveLula order, based on sweet almond, olive, coconut and jojoba oils - thought it would help my drying, split-ended hair. Will let you know how I get on when it arrives.

I'm not completely certain (the daily routine sometimes blurs together, doesn't it!), but I think I last washed my hair on Monday. It feels a bit greasy, but nowhere near as bad as it used to after even 48 hours without washing. I guess switching to a non-SLES shampoo and using it a bit less often has already reduced my grease output substantially :)

OH used to suffer really badly with a dry, flaky scalp. He has a number 1 all over and was using head and shoulders but it didn't work. I started giving him a weekly massage with a scalp oil from the body shop - that cleared it up in no time. He still uses H&S but hasn't had the flaky scalp thing for a long time. (Time I weaned him off H&S as well I think!) 8)

Am sitting here with my head covered in coconut oil! Had to shampoo my hair again yesterday ( ), and it dried it out something rotten. Got to try to get the balance right between not being a greaseball with the oil, or having frazzled dried hair! AAARGH

I'm still so wishing I could have carried on the no shampooing. Maybe if I can stabilise my scalp I will be able to start all over again.

Well I've carried on with my different method. Basically I don't wash my hair in anything. I don't rinse it in anything not even water. Now it might sound skanky but I brush it a lot and it doesnt get ganky or smell or anything for about 3 weeks now. I'm trying to increase the amount of time each time. It started at about a week so three weeks is an improvement. I actually leave it to get greasy for a week after so it can start to get itself balanced then I wash it. Even then its not too bad. When I do wash it I use a sls parebens etc free shampoo, actually was the kids one last night as I forgot to buy some more now I rarely use it. So at the moment I wash my hair 12 times a year. Wow bit different to the people who wash theres at least once a day.

I hd to wash mine (sls free shampoo) after 5 days as I really couldnt have gone to work with it the wat it was, but I'm quite pleased as its about 4 days longer than I have ever gone in my adult life!! I think I'll be increasing the number of days I can go in between washes gradually. I didnt notice any particular difference in my hair but its early days yet.

My eldest daughter didnt get any grease after 5 days but I washed hers to go to school this morning, Emily has now gone about 8 days without shampoo and hers is fine. Phils hair is no different but his scalp is really getting flaky, so I've been rubbing vitamin E oil into his hair. We will see how that goes.

Snowy you may find that using a non-SLS shampoo will help OHs scalp

Pelicano - I used coconut oil when I was travelling in Africa - waist length hair and no real way of washing it for weeks, so I smoothed the oil into it and plaited it. My hair was in lovely condition for weeks after, but you do need a pretty strong s'poo to get it out.

Exactly the same here - I had been washing my hair every couple of days, out of sheer habit, but when I had a mild flu last week I didn't wash it for 4-5 days and it was no worse than it used to be after 48 hours. Proof positive that SLES-free shampoo is much kinder to the scalp :)

Is there anybody who has been doing the no 'poo thing for a while, brave enough to post pics of their hair? I read all through the original thread on this topic a few months ago, people had posted pics, but they were all unavailable by the time I read it through :( Since reading the thread I try really hard to let at least 5 days go before washing my hair, I used to wash it every day. I find it really hard to do, to be honest I'd rather wash my hair than have a bath to feel clean

I'll get dh to take a pic when I'm a few weeks into my next no wash for a few weeks period.

Snowy I would back up what Claret says about the shampoo. I used to get awful dandruff and a really sore scalp. I dont anymore since I changed shampoos and thats what has made it possible for me to do this not wash as often thing.

I was considering trying to take photos of my own hair :? to save the :roll::roll: I'll get if ask my boys to do it. There will be a bit of photoshopping going on (my hair is one thing, but you're not seeing my face  ).

:D:D I'm the same. I hate having my picture taken, I think I am the most unphotogenic person on the planet  Am waiting with baited breath for your 'hair only' pics :)

Oh I dont know about that, I think I must surely have the title for worlds most unphotogenic person at the moment. This no shampoo thing is making it a hundred times worse aswell. I washed my hair monday morning and its only Thursday afternoon and I can feel the grease sliding down my head, I'm getting really paranoid now. I've just been to a local chemist and bought about 4 bottles of Jason SLS free shampoo.

I'm desperatre not to wash my hair yet, but it smells so nice................ Help me I think the clean demons are about to invade

Anne (Myles) posted a photo of hers which was taken from the back - I know it requires someone to take the photo, but then no-one will have to show their faces?

I've met Sheila and Louise since they started doing this and can vouch for the fact that their hair was so improved...... 8)
