We cleared our chicken's impacted crop!

Recommended Posts

We were really worried on Friday morning, as Barbara's crop was bulging first thing, and we had found a soft shelled egg in the litter tray  (never seen one before). I was frantic having ready all the stories on the internet about them sometimes needing surgery to get rid of it. After a little research, I went to the chemist to buy a syringe. and the fishing tackle shop to buy a couple of bags of white maggots. Gross! :vom:

But I'm happy to report that, after a couple more days of maggots given in the evenings doused in olive oil, and a little firm but gentle massage, all is well again! Panic over!:lol::lol:

Well done - we had the same problem - last year. beryl had impacted crop which turned into sour crop. we had a syringe and epsom salts - we had to turn her upside to help her get it out of both ends - massage her for a week and she came though it. We also had some help from maggotts which the chickens loved.

We were so pleased - like you reading some of the horrifying stories was worrying.

well done! I had the same problem a few weeks ago and its very worrying and takes a lot of TLC - the vet thought I had probably saved her life, thanks to all the advice of this website. Mabel lost a lot of weight during it and went very very pale. She is my only ex-batt not to have gone through a moult yet so I think it had quite am impact on her.. she isn't laying much still but her face has started going red again recently so things are improving. Hope yours makes a full recovery!
