Helly Welly
Rhapsody, that's amazing, well done. I've been trying to eat more carefully lately, mainly because it feels wrong to be going to the gym and then eating chocolate. I've found one of the easiest ways to eat healthily is to keep a food diary. Writing everything down makes you pay attention to what you eat and drink, but also, you don't want to read a list of unhealthy food.

Jules.
Having dropped 1lb so far this week my BMI is now magically at 24.6 How is the BMI chart worked, how can a 1lb weight loss lose me so much BMI?
The Dogmother
Because it is grouped Jules - that's why it doesn't always sound right
Jules.
I've lost another 1lb today, so that's 2 in total this week I've achieved my target much quicker than anticipated, 17lbs in 7 weeks instead of 16lbs in 10 weeks. It's not been easy, & very often I've gone to bed hungry I'm going for another 5-6 lbs loss in the next 3 weeks, to make it just over 1 1/2 stone total loss. My BMI is now still 24.6 I've found it encouraging to post my results on here, like an on-line diet club

Snowy
Well done all of you! One day I might be inspired to do it myself Just reading about your BMIs - don't put too store in them. The British Heart Foundation now looks at waist measurement as a better indicator of health risk. For a woman you should have a waist measurement of 32" or less. Between 32" and 35" puts you at risk of heart disease, over 35" is considered high risk. For men it is 37", 40" is high risk. Muscle definitely weighs more than fat, so if you are fit and active, your BMI can stay artificially high. A quote from the american Weight control information network: Excess weight as measured by BMI is not the only risk to your health. Where excess fat is located on your body may be another risk. If you carry fat mainly around your waist, you are more likely to develop health problems than if you carry fat mainly in your hips and thighs. This is true even if your BMI falls within the normal range. Women with a waist measurement of more than 35 inches or men with a waist measurement of more than 40 inches may have a higher disease risk than people with smaller waist measurements because of where their fat lies. To measure your waist circumference, place a tape measure around your bare abdomen just above your hip bone. Be sure that the tape is snug (but does not compress your skin) and that it is parallel to the floor. Relax, exhale, and measure your waist. Rhapsody
Interesting point about the above- in UK it is 32" for a woman and 38" for a man! The problem with BMI is that it was done just after rationing finished after WW2 and everyone was malnourished! And that it used a very small group to set the measurements (I have a feeling it was under 100 people), for some reason it has never been updated. The Dogmother
When I did personal training, I always used to steer people away from getting worried by the BMI charts. One chap was the ideal shape and weight for his height, very fit and muscled, but because he was so muscly, his BMI showed that he was obese
Snowy
That's why we tend to go by waist size on pre-employment medicals - we had a standard that said we couldn't take on firefighters who had BMIs over 30. Trouble is, that ruled out all the rugby players!
The Dogmother
Good idea Snowy. Shame is that the medical profession and most insurance bodies still use the BMI charts You must have the most envied job in the country.. getting to see fire-fighters in their underwear

Egluntyne
Have lost 5lb in the last fortnight ....just by cutting out grains. Haven't felt particularly hungry and have discovered that it is perfectly possible to enjoy a curry or stirfry without rice. And I feel more energetic. Wheat does make you sleepy.
