buffie
It's lovely reading what inspired chicken keeping . Must get myself moving before I need to be moved on castors though. BBx

maxhen
One of my earliest memories is of an afternoon when I locked my younger brother in a hen house! I grew up with hens, bantams, ducks. We had a one eyed bantam cockerel called George (he had been rehomed to us after being picked on by a bigger cockerel in his previous home) and he was king pin in our yard on the farm where my mum milked the cows. But what tipped it for me was when a year ago I had to accept that the cottage in the country that we had been on the point of exchange for twice fell through when our buyer's buyer pulled out (again - it had been going on for nearly eighteen months) and we would have to stay put. Nothing wrong with where we are - still fairly rural but not dream home. I had been waiting for some hens and for life to start with that proposed move. As it was the dream had gone so I made the decision to have the hens anyway - with an eglu of course. Helen
ubereglu
I'm not quite sure why I chose to have chickens as pets. We were walking in Langport one day and I kept asking for a pet, I didn't really want a cat-it would adopt Dad! I didn't want a dog-Vikki's really scared of them! Hamsters-Die too quickly Rats and mice-Mum would leave home Rabbits and guinea pigs-Bad experiences, Sarah's been bitten by them too many times. I reeled out a whole long list and then settled my sights on chickens. Probably because Dad always took me up to the garden centre up the road where they kept goats, chickens and shetland ponies. They still keep hens and also two pygmy goats. Also my Mum's Dad was a farmer, they never had chickens, but her Mum had bantams for a while. Her Dad had chickens wandering around when he was younger before the war at the farm his Dad(my great grandad) lived on. This is probably also the reason why I like shires so much too, as he had one before and during the war as he needed one for his job! The Dogmother
So you could've ended up with pygmy goats! They are soo gorgeous! The wire hen arrived today BTW - better than most of what I've seen in the shops - Rosie, Phil and my mother are dead impressed well done you! ubereglu
Clare I'm glad you like it. I don't think I would've ended up with pygmy goats-something tells me they would have definitely put their foot down. Did you like the postcard?
The Dogmother
I only had a brief look at it, but will go back and look at the postcard tonight. Thanks again.
