My Skye looked a bit cockeral-ish for a while, big tail and pointy hackle feathers (altough they look rounded here), but she's definitely a girl - this was her last summer -

And yes.....Gin is a hussey. OH just told me she keeps bowing to him....tried to explain it is called crouching and what it means but Sky Sports is on so not sure he took it in

Skye crouches all the time, when she does I ruffle her feathers and give her a tickle under her wings she loves it, the floosey!

I believe Flo crouched earlier for the older girls.. but her comb has only just started to develop so she's a little hussy to start so early

 

So any sign of Gin laying her first egg yet??

She is def crouching and face furniture is getting bigger and redder each day but no sign of an egg.

 

I think I may need to show her where to lay. As they are out in the garden most of the time I am thinking she might start laying under the big conifer or behind the composter.

 

What do we all think? She will be the first to lay so she can`t follow anyone example.

Hey Cookie both my gingernuts crouched with small combs and laid 2 weeks later. The combs grew afterwards.

If they are crouching then it'll only be about a week until they start to lay, longer if the days are shorter

My buff sussex just laid her first egg and all the symptoms/signs you've been experiencing are the same as mine. She had her first egg within a week of crouching and had very similar features/characteristics as Gin..............next photo an eggy?

Well just got back from work and checked and ......no egg.....yet!

 

She did crouch for me again though!

 

Next pic is of Gin`s and her ever increasing face furniture. I have noticed that her comb has gone much redder today

I got home from work last night and went out to check on Gin and OSH and what did I find.......AN EGG!

 

Our very first home laid egg weighed in at 44g

 

Anyone know how heavy an egg has to be to be classed as medium or large.

 

I know gin`s is too small to be either
