Redwing
My Norton anti-virus protection expires soon My neighbour tells me that my BT broadband will have antivirus protection, does anyone know if this is correct and if it will do the same job as the Norton and keep me protected? If I need the Norton can I re-use the same disc as last time so it would be 'free'? Has anyone renewed their Norton and roughly how much does it cost please? (I don't want to click on it in case I can't come back out of its expensive!) Any help would be great I am a computer numptie
Hen Watch
I am a computer numptie too. I use Norton and was just re-subscribing every year until I realised that the subscription was more expensive than just buying a new Norton box from Amazon. Then, once I'd done that my brother in law told me about a good free one I could have got. Can't remember which one it was now. You need Fred for some advice really...... Ain't Nobody Here
I use Avira which is free and seems to work well. I changed from AVG on Fred's advice (not that I was unhappy with AVG, Fred just seems to know what he's talking about!)
Snowy
I found Norton slowed everything down waaaaaay too much so deleted it and downloaded AVG. I didn't move to Avira as AVG is now available free as version 8 so have that instead. It hums along quietly in the background and never causes any problems
Mutrix Farmers
OH uses Avast on our computers at home. It's a free package that just runs quietly in the background. We've had no problems or dodgy viruses trying to eat our data.
Blackrocksrock
Read Norton - Red get rid of it! Download avg free is as good and keeps it all up to day fine in the background
cordelia
..one thing to bear in mind with any anti-virus is that you must have regular updates... (I used to manage a computer shop, and still work in IT..) I've known people who think they are protected when they bought their PC 3 years ago, and have never updated the antivirus...therefore its at least 3 years old, and wont be able to deal with a virus that someone wrote a week ago... so whether its free or purchased, please run the updates...if no updates are available on a free version, update the latest version available, but be careful that you are using a recognised antivirus...from a reputable site.. Also you should ensure you always update Windows....my sister had 64 windows security updates for me to download on her laptop....its very important, Microsoft are always issuing security releases, and you can update your computer automatically with these.. they release them to ensure the safety of windows and your data and details... hope this helps
Cinnamon
AVG fan here too. I used to have Norton & Macafee briefly, but AVG, which is FREE, is much better than either of them. I wouldn't switch back
Redwing
Thanks everyone, that is great I bought Norton twice last year the first time I bought it the laptop was stolen in a break in shortly afterwards and whoever bought it 'down the pub' proceeded to overwrite my backed up photo's with their own and to add insult to injury I could see them when I signed in to retrieve 'my' photos, response from Norton...........silence, I lost my photos on the laptop and on my backup So I was hoping there was an alternative to Norton so I don't have to give them any more of my money
