Tessa the Duchess
Went this morning to pick her up, so paranoid were we about bad traffic that we got there an hour early Anyway after much faffing about, signing things etc., we drove home the proud owners of.... She went mad once we got home, raced around the garden, raced around the house, the poor cat freaked and climbed high up into a tree we've taken her out for two walks, and once we got to the green space we put her on a really long (50ft) lead rope so we could see if she was any good at recall, she was brilliant came back every time. She seems very bright and I think she is going to be a breeze to train. We are not keeping Tilly as a name, we chose Polly, but that seems to be changing to Poppy, watch this space Tessa, very happy to be a dog owner again

Tessa the Duchess
isnt she lovely she has a cheeky look - i wonder what she is planning cathy x Apparently she was planning to completely forget the fact that she is housetrained, so pooed and weed on the stair carpet Google (cat) came down from the tree, but has become very huffy and has decided to set up a permanent home in my bedroom I suppose after living with an elderly arthritic dog for so many years, who barely moved apart from eating, drinking and using the garden facilities, it's a bit of a shock to the system to have this bouncing bundle of energy around. She has just captured and destroyed the washing up sponge Tessa

Couperwife
She has just captured and destroyed the washing up sponge well, those washing up sponges are evil aliens that could (given half a chance) take over the world AND eat all of the doggle food so, really, you were saved cathy x

BeckyBoo
Congratulations, she's lovely! She looks bright and cheeky as though she's planning her next "capture" - I've got a slow, somewhat dim loveable old slug for a dog but they are so loving and so rewarding. Congratulations again on being a dog owner again, BeckyBoo

The Dogmother
She looks lovely; a right cheeky monkey! They'll try to chew anything until they learn about what is off limits Ruby is currently trying my patience by insisting on eating her bone in the living room instead of in the kitchen. She knows that bones stay on the tiled floor
Tessa the Duchess
Thanks for all your lovely comments Actually things are not going to plan First off we were assured she was house trained but that she tended to pee herself when she got really excited. Not true, she spent most of the weekend peeing and pooing everywhere and always on carpet the house is redulant with the smell of........ dettol!! we have put baby stair gates everywhere, so she is confined to shiny surfaces only. The thing she does which is really bugging me, is chasing the cat The rescue home gave her the 'cat test' which basically means taking her into the garden where the feral cats live and seeing her reaction, apparently she just looked at them and lost interest, so passed the 'cat test'. Google is terrified to try and come into the house, so DH takes the dog out for a walk and I entice Google in so she can eat and drink, it's getting very boring The dog also jumps up all the time, nearly knocks me off my feet, I know that this is youthful exuberance and a bit of training will right it, and I should really stop moaning and just enjoy her. I think part of my irritation is that I have a horrible virus thingy, thudding head, sore throat, swollen glands and a great feeling of lassitude, I don't feel able to cope with it all at the moment. Her name is Polly, she was Poppy for a while, but now definitely Polly, she is actually lovely and I know she is going to be a lot of fun when we have ironed out the teething problems. Tessa. The Dogmother
Sorry to hear that it's not going so well. Getting a new dog, especially a mature rescue dog who may be more set into bad habits is never easy. Firstly, use a pet disinfectant to clean up any mess as Dettol and other household cleaners contain an ingredient which smells like ammonia and actually encourages them to mess in that place again. I'd always recommend keeping a new dog confined to a wipe-clean area until you can be sure of its house-training. Take them out all the time and reward with lots of over the top praise and treats when they do perform outdoors, but avoid giving any negative feedback when they do it inside, just quietly clean it up and take them out do do it. Good treats fro training are those horrid Herta frankfurters; chop them up into minute squares about 0.5 cm and do the same with some cheap plasticy cheese. Even my attention defecit lurcher loves these! When she jumps up just ignore her, don't even push her off or say 'down'. Cross your arms or put your hands in your pockets and turn your face right away from her. When she has all four paws on the floor, then reward her and make a fuss. It does work well, and I always teach children to do this when a dog they don't know jumps up at them. I hope that you feel better soon and that she settles down with you. Finding a good trainer in your area will help immensely.
Tessa the Duchess
Thanks for your advice Clare. I will stop using the Dettol and find some pet disinfectant. When she jumps up I try to ignore her but it's hard when she bashes you on the nose When I am sitting up at the table she jumps up and tries to get on my lap, which is annoying, but I know that she is young and just needs training. I have found a local dog training class, and intend to book her in as soon as poss. Tessa
