Scuttle
Hello, this is my first post. Thanks for everyone for all the great advice on this site!! Just wondered whether anyone could recommend a vet in the Hemel Hempstead area? One of our 3 chicken's is obviously feeling really poorly. She’s been laying soft eggs on and off for a while and has recently done a couple of the “yolky poos” pictured in another post. She’s now sitting really hunched in the run looking very sorry for herself. They’ve just finished a course of flubenvet. She’s drinking and I’ve managed to persuade her to eat some layers pellets soaked in water with some added crushed egg shells. (Hope it's ok to ask for recommendations!) Many thanks! Budgies
Hi Scuttle, sorry to hear about your chook. I can't recommend a vet in your area I'm afraid, but I'd definitely try and get some calcium into her. It sounds as though she has more softies on the way, and they make them feel really unwell. I know it's often mentioned on here as being a good idea but ground up eggshell cannot be easily absorbed by most hens. Your best bet is limestone flour or ground up cuttle fish bone, both of which are pure calcium carbonate and more readily assimilated by hens. If you give her some of this, add a little cod liver oil - the vitamin D improves the takeup of calcium. In the current situation, I'd try to get some Zolcal-d which is water soluble liquid calcium and contains vitamin d already. Pet shops that cater for reptiles or small caged birds sell it. Otherwise look online - there are lots of suppliers. Good luck with your girl
Scuttle
Thanks very much for all your comments. We took her to our local vet yesterday (not a chicken expert but I thought it was better than driving too far in the heat). He gave her some antibiotics and she's looking much brighter this morning. Although still a bit wobbly on her feet she's wandering around the run the other two . I've ordered some Zolcal-d so hopefully that'll improve things as well. Thanks again
Budgies
Glad to hear she's perked up a bit, hope she continues to do well, fingers crossed for you here!
purplefowler
I know I am abit late on this one, but for future reference (hopefully not needed) my local vets seem to think that the vet in Aston Clinton had a bird specialist. Not to sure of the name of it, but there can't be too many vets there, it's not big enough!
