Daniel
AAGGGHHHHH I'm used to people disagreeing with me on this forum - but usually you will make a good point that will be thought provoking and even if I still disagree, then at least you will have challenged my attitude and made me think about what I am saying. The Doctor Who foum is cheesing me off! A year ago I predicted that Torchwood would by a load of decadent nonsense and I was right. However, trying to have a sensible debate is proving fruitless. The Who forum is full of Vicki Pollard's and I'm getting really cross... I'm trying to make my point but being totally stifled by thickos who won't have a word said against Russel T.Davies. THEY THINK I'M A PRUDE. THIS IS MAKING ME REALLY CROSS.
AnnieP
Dan, you can say it on here.... I will certainly agree with your superior knowledge as I haven't got a clue who Vicki Pollard and Russel T Davies are, and if the radio is anything to go by, they are hyping this Torchwood thing up beyond a joke. No wonder it had the highest viewing figures for a new show ever: The hype ALMOST made me go out and buy a TV! Moan away Dan
Cinnamon
I didn't see it Dan - it clashed with too many other things - but its on this week on terrestrial isn't it? I will catch it then & let you know what we think. I quite fancy Jack though,so I may be biased
buffie
I don't watch it but moan here . I expect it's an age group thing Dan and you can't get through to them, BBx
Laura & CTB
I'll agree with you Dan, after all the hype I was expecting something good but was very disappointed. I thought it was supposed to appeal to an intelligent adult audience but the plot was weak and predictable. The second episode got switched off after ten minutes. I shant be watching it again. Egluntyne
"Torchwood" is an anagram of ""Doctor " Who"!
AnnieP
"Torchwood" is an anagram of ""Doctor " Who"! Perhaps it should be renamed "Doc. Who Rot" then!
Mel (& Paul)
yup, Dan, I agree with you! really really disappointing. Paul describes it as "under budgeted and over acted" give me prime suspect any time
PurpleHen
Oh dear.. I didn't think the first one was that bad *ducks and runs for cover on random flag stone which will make me invisible* ... but I have yet to watch the second episode.... did all seem a bit corny for the last few minutes though. And as for the flag / paving stone bit - they've nicked that idea from The Restaurant at The End of the Universe - or was it the next one? Anyway - nicked it from Douglas Adams - the whole "perception" thing......... I was hoping the second episode would get on more with the interesting stuff - whereas the first episode was obviously them trying to set the scene - and that just isn't needed in Doc Who is it? We all know the scene already...
Mel (& Paul)
dont let your children watch the second one I do think its a shame that they couldnt do something on similar lines to Doctor Who - there is bad language / sex etc., in Torchwood and I dont think it sits right (no sniggering in the back please!) on a programme that is linked to a family programme. Hey ho, perhaps I am getting old (oi! I heard that!)
PurpleHen
there is bad language / sex etc., in Torchwood I can see what you mean then - wasn't that noticable in the first one, will try and watch the second tonight so Ican comment..... No kiddies yet (first due Feb '07) so maybe I should just cover my bump to muffle the sound.,.....
Mel (& Paul)
I would
Daniel
They hyped Torchwood throughout S2 of Doctor Who so the children are desperate to see it, but it is wholly unsuitable. If Russell T Davies wants to make a programme like that then he should let it stand on its own merits rather than tacking it on to a successful 40 year old family institution. Here is me trying to make a point... I am not a prude but I don't see why this programme has to be attached to Doctor Who. Sorry i just don't get it and someone else made an excellent point that other, similar adult drama doesn't have as much sex or swearing - and yet they are more gripping and enjoyable. This all smacks of repressed blokes who didn't have as much action in their 20s as they would have liked and now they are making television to try and shock / challenge whatever. It's just a bit sad - like Elton John or George Michael - silly repressed men who should know better. I'm not shocked I just pity them! Well, where does Julie fit in with your assesment then? Fact is you say it was not gripping or enjoyable enough for you which is fair enough. But for me, as I hardly watch any T.V., so I can not compare it to other adult stuff, I loved the refreshing change of it. I don't know about Julie. To be fair, I don't know about Russell or Chris either - I am just making an observation that this is the kind of thing that some saddo middle-aged person might do to for shock value (when most of us have got all that out of our systems when we were a lot younger)... I'm afraid I'm not articulating this very well! To compare it to George Michael; if he smokes a joint on telly, you don't think; Oh wow! He's so street and cool and hard! you just think, oh dear - what a terribly boring man! However, if you see a teenage Siouxsie Sioux and the Sex Pistols on a live episdoe of Bill Grundy in the 70s and they call him a dirty old man and an effing rotter and create a huge public backlash then you can't help but thinking that they are VERY, VERY COOL. I get the feeling that RTD et al would love to be John Lydon but unfortunately they are just a little bit too George Michael... Anyway, it is good that you got something out of it and I'm not knocking you for enjoying it (I normally agree with most of your points and I respect your opinion). Despite me finishing the post in a nice way this was where the deabte turned into a really nasty cat fight! I also noticed a dig at faith in Torchwood too - a bloke was bought back from the dead in Sunday's episode and they asked him what happened when he died and he said; "Nothing, there was nothing..." I'm getting cross again now!
Guest
Watched it, won't be making the same mistake again. Just an excuse to cash in on the popularity of Doctor Who.
PurpleHen
OK - watched the second one last night - I can see what you all mean However... it is still Sky +'d - I would like to see if the next episodes can be about a different story line which doesn't involve sex. I am waiting until next week for my judgment!

Daniel
OK - watched the second one last night - I can see what you all mean Crazy isn't it? A real error of judgement - but RTD seems to be fixated with sex and bisexual relationships and has to keep ramming it down our throats (pardon the expression)! There is no episode guide published yet - but I will be looking out for the episodes written by P.J.Hammond (he created 70s/80s childrens sci-fi/ghost series; Sapphire & Steel - which was ACE. Remember the railway station story???). Fingers crossed they deliver. I have been saying for ages that RTD is prancing around in the Emperor's New Clothes and "Ooops, word censored!"ody in the industry has the bottle to tell him. Maybe, Torchwood will be the straw that breaks the camel's back...
triphazard99
I missed it on Sunday night, but watched it last night whilst videoing.....thinking my elder two kids would enjoy it Glad I stayed up to watch it and didn't just sit down with them to view it tonight!!!!! My eldest is 13, and I've warned him there's a lot of pretty unnecessary sex in the second episode and left him to make his own mind up - but NO WAY is my 10 year old daughter watching it.......even if every other child in her primary school has seen it when she goes back after half term. I'm no prude, and we're a pretty open minded, tattooed hairy assed biker family (well, we don't ALL have hairy bottoms), but I have to draw the line sometimes, just a shame it's on a Dr Who spin off - cos me and the kids have LOVED the last two series. It's also not as good as I thought it would be....all the fearsome alien clips in the trailers turned out to be pretty much all there was to see and I watch this type of thing for the special effects not the porn......... Lesley-Jean
Oh.... you are so right shona It started off quite hopefully. The "set up" seemed quite interesting..... But the second part just degenerated in absolute ....chicken poo How dissapointing, dreadful plot, ham acting, and a dialogue my chickens could have written, won't be watching any more

That's how I feel. I am *so* NOT a prude. I am really open with my children - but this is just SAD rubbish. Jules and Harry had some more packs of Doctor Who trading cards tonight and there are loads of Torchwood characters in there. How can the BBC claim that this is for adults and then sell the children Captain Jack action figures, Torchwood trading cards and have huge posters on billboards and double decker buses that the children will want to identify with? If I were into conspiracy theroies... Thank you all for reminding me that I am not going mad! I'm a great Dr Who fan but have not see Torchwood yet. I'll be watching tonight and let you know what I think tomorrow Dan Excellent. But you have to be impartial! Don't let the debate here lead you - I want to know what you really think. PS I never liked Return of the Jedi as much as Star Wars becuase lots of monsters and lots of effects don't mean a better story. It's the same thing here - lots of rudeness and swearing don't make a better sci-fi show.
