i was lying in bed listening to my radio yesterday morning, when i heard another soldier had been killed in afghanistan. the soldier killed was called sean upton and had been a childhood friend since the age of 4. i havent seen him in years, but went to school toghether since toodlers and knew each other right up until we left senior school, he lived just round the corner from me when we were kids and we were in the same team throughout junior school. we were in the blue team and our little chant was "blues blues never loose" well they have now. its such a sad day when you hear news like this.

 

 

the war goes on in a land far away, and we carry on our daily lives without a care in the world.

It's always particularly sad when someone dies before their time

I hate listening to the news on afganistan, it doesnt make me angry, just sad that these brave men and women are risking their lives and out there no one seems grateful (except people at home)

Same here, Bron. It's dreadfully sad hearing about the loss of such young lives. Some of the lads who have been killed are younger than my eldest son and that's no age to die . My thoughts are with the families and friends of all these brave young people.

My post gave me goosepimples for a few minutes. I live very close to Wootton Bassett and so am very aware of each soldier lost. I am sorry to hear your news and my thoughts are with all of those involved. They are doing a brave thing but where and when is it all going to end Whatever people's opionions of the war and their political inclinations we must all support our soldiers out there who are doing their jobs and putting their lives on the line.

Every time I hear the dreaded news on TV it causes me so much despair and anger for the troops. My son leaves in 37 days for 6 months in Helmand and I for one know it is going to be hard on us the family and for him it is going to be dreadful. He keeps reassuring me that everything is going to be fine but it is always at the back of my mind that something might and could happen. We are having Christmas before he goes! Do you know how hard it is to find crackers at this time of the year!

 

Each time they bring the boys back on the aircraft into Lyneham, and I with everyone else watch on TV the solemn and dignified happening in Wootten Bassett it makes me proud but then, Oh so angry at our governement for sending them to a place where we will in the end make no difference. Historically it has always been thus and when I hear Gordon Brown saying the lads did not die in vain it makes my blood boil. Sadly they did and will continue to do so until someone makes things better. Senseless, senseless loss of life for WHAT. An area the size of the Isle of Wight that will be overrun with Taliban as soon as we move on.

 

I pray for all the troops and I pray that my boy will go out do his job well and just get back safe.

A boy called Cyrus Thatcher was killed a couple of months ago, & I know his family a bit - they live just a couple of miles away.

I dread listening to the news, every day we hear of another soldier dying, one of the old boys at work pointed out that far more died in the 2 world wars but somehow he feels this seems worse, with every one being reported individually. It seems worse because we are not under a direct threat as we were back then & its' hard to see why our lads & lasses are out there, I'm sure there are good reasons for it. DS & his friends are 18 I cannot imagine it being one of them out there, Jillus I'll keep everything crossed

One of my closest friends' boyfriend is out there - I think he's got about 9 weeks left. All the hairs stand up on the back of my neck when I hear them say 'soldier from the Midlands' on the news.

 

I wasn't really aware of the Vietnam war but have seen enough footage and 'true' films to know what a futile offensive it was. The Afghanistan conflict seems so similar. So many young lives lost and for what???

 

The sooner our troops are home the better.

It's horrid, I wish they would get our boys out of Afghanistan. So sad. Most are very young too - with their lives only just beginning. They shouldn't be there & they certainly shouldn't be losing their lives through war & unrest in another country. It's heartbreaking.

I hope today feels better than yesterday and that you can make some sort of sense out of your childhood friends death. It was tragic and I am sure he will leave a great gaping hole in lots of lives. All you can do is hope that all those funny and good memories you have come to the front.

So sorry to hear the news Laura. My son is due to join the army soon. He passed final selection on Wednesday. I want to tell him not to join but you can't can you? We think his intake is January. I'm praying our boys come home before he starts. In fact I hope they come home soon anyway. I heard last night there were 56 of our troops injured in the first 2 weeks of July. On top of that there are those that were killed. When will it end/

Laura, I am so sorry to hear about your friend, Sean Upton. It is so terribly sad. They all seem so young. I always stop and pay respect when it comes onto the news. I wish I lived closer to Wooton Basset so that I could go and show support for our lads.

 

Jillus, I'll keep you and your son in my thoughts. It must be so hard for you. My brother was in the Navy during the Falklands war and he was sent off there, thankfully by the time he got there it had ended and they just had to help clear up. We were so worried though the whole time. He lost a few friends.
