Has anyone repaced Mark 1 bars with anything plastic?

Recommended Posts

I have the dreaded red mite in my eglu  and the roosting bars seem to be the problem...

I was going to look at the DIY store tomorrow to see if I could buy any kind of squared plastic 'tubing' to cut down and replace the bars..

Has anyone done this? And if so what did you use?

Thanks for reading!!!

Treating them with creosote replacement would do the trick as that can actually repel the mites but they need a couple of days to dry so the hens would have to snuggle till then!

Varnish might help if you are not keen on creosote replacement

Someone also 'plastic dipped' their bars but I can't remember who or what they used, they may be along shortly

B&Q certainly sell metal mini box sections but they would be cold and slippery

Another option is to replace them wiith wood and replace on a regular basis

I Plastidipped my wooden roosting bars :) . It was a bit of a faff and it did wear off if I scrubbed too hard but I reckon it would be worth it if you're trying to eradicate red mite.

I used the spray but I seem to remember the paint being more reasonable.

It did look pretty good, if I say so myself  .
