I've not had any major problems the last 2 winters. But then I'm in South East so not too harsh on the weather front.

I have had a few mornings of breaking ice, empting it out and then renewing with warm water, but not that many ........

I've not taken any measures other than on really snowy nights to empty water glug out and bring it in overnight.

I have a plastic ball floating in mine, but it didn't stop it freezing (I leave it in there though, as I find it hard to gauge the water level from outside the run and it helps me see whethere there's enough in there or not).

The biggest problem with the Superglug is that the drinking nipples freeze up. I have spent many chilly mornings poking my fingers through the run bars, trying to thaw them out! I usually add some hot water with a watering-can, to melt any ice in the Glug, and then bash the nipples with the spout of the can, to loosen them.

The best solution really is to take it in overnight, but as in winter it's dark before I get home, that doesn't work too well for me. Someone on here insulated theirs with a jiffy bag, I believe.

It happens so rarely I wouldn't worry too much about it. But you certainly need to check on icy mornings that the water hasn't frozen. I use the run pin to test it, and any ice is usually so thin that the pin breaks it.

It would become a problem if you go away during a very cold spell and the people looking after your hens don't think about the possibility of the water freezing, so this is something to emphasize.

This advice probably doesn't apply to the frozen north. If I lived up there, I would solve the problem by having two water containers: I would put the clean one out each morning at the same time as bringing the frozen one in to dethaw.
