Guest
I would just like to announce our first egg since November, Typical really I have just had a dozen off my veg man, but I'm not complaining. There was also a broken one in the nesting box so I don't know if they are both laying. I think it's Rose as she crouched when I let her out and she hasn't done that for ages Well done girls and heres to many more of the little beauties. I'll have to find them a little treat

Snowy
There seems to be a glut of egg posts now - obviously it's that time of year! Congratulations on your eggs Debs! Hopefully my other 3 will now soon join Florrie and start producing. It looks promising as Pom has now started to crouch when I'm near her! One Man Banned
Well we're ready to start using our eggs again after the antibiotics they had, only to find one egg and a no-shelled in the poop tray I hope it's a one off and it's just them getting back into the habit (they have already had a few days off anyway) Made sure that they have plenty of grit but still a little worried but Well Done that chook Debs! They do know how to time it don't they A xx

Mrs Frugal
Great news, Debs . Can they come and remind Jenny how it works, please!!
Cate in NZ
Great news Debs . With 7 of them I'm still getting plenty of eggs, but the laying rate has slowed down considerably during the winter months. I used to get 5-6 a day, now it's usually 3, although Phil and Brie taking an extended laying holiday doesn't help much There's nothing to beat your own freshly laid eggs though, so here's hoping that Rose and Mickey are ready to get back into their stride and lay you lots of lovely fresh eggs . AnnieP
I really don't understand this. I am in no way gloating (well, not much ), but why have my three laid continuously throughout the winter? They are no younger/older than any others on the forum, unyet most of us are reporting a drop in production. They are treated no differently than any of yours... though possibly not as spoilt as some..... Who else has seen no drop in egg production over the winter? It would be really interesting to compare notes..... I think its the Yellow Eglu that makes all the difference... extra light etc..... I KNEW they shouldn't have discontinued it.... and I haven't seen a fly anywhere near it for months and months....
Cate in NZ
I'm blaming Phil and her highly strung, pure bred ways..... laying eggs is a little beneath her.... too posh to push and all that, and Brie who was unwell tail end of last summer and hasn't laid a proper egg since then for my decline in production . I'm sure that green and orange eglus are just as conducive to egg laying as yellow ones..... especially since my flock have taken to laying under a conifer in the garden and are turning their beaks up at the nesting boxes Mine aren't spoilt either.... in fact I regularly feel quite mean. Treats only happen if we have leftover rice, pasta or veg, all of which they hoover up greedily. The rest of the time it's layers pellets, or, ummm.... layers pellets
Guest
There must be something in the air, becuase we had our first egg in ages today, and a first egg for the gorgeous, big fat, fluffy bottomed Hunney!

Lesley
We had another first as well yesterday - a big cream coloured egg. We're not sure who laid it though It was in the Maternity Ward - two ex-broodies and their almost fully grown chicks (and the baby bantams) It is far too big to be the bantam broody so we think it might be the beautiful Big Buff? But, I thought Buff Orpingtons laid a relatively small egg? It could be either of the Welsummer 'chicks' but theirs are supposed to be very dark brown or it could be the big Marans which we're still not sure whether it is a hen or a cockerel, but hers should be brown as well Confused of Stratford
hillfamily
Who else has seen no drop in egg production over the winter? It would be really interesting to compare notes..... Twinkle has laid an egg every day since she arrived last September. Babs who was one of our original girls and is now 2 years old lays about 4 eggs a week and has done for about the last year - although she always lays the most beautiful dark brown eggs which always weigh at least 80g She is obviously going for quality not quantity Belle always laid every day - albeit very tiny eggs compared to the others - from when she arrived with Twinkle last year but then suddenly stopped in early December - gave her some shell stim as we discovered she was laying eggs without shells and after Xmas she atarted laying again but has stopped again. She's only tiny - supposed to be an Amber Star but she was the 'runt of the litter' so has only the faintest markings, is much smaller than Twinkle and cannot make any noise other than a very quiet 'mmmmmmmmmmm'. Love her too bits
bellekatz
My Girls have had 2 short breaks in January - both about a week long - Chloe (devil chicken!!) has been on a slow and steady moult but has carried on laying apart from those breaks, Ginge and Marmite are in their first winter so just took a short break, Ellie has just started laying at 30 weeks old - we have had two tiny blue eggs this week. Apart from the two weeks in December we are on 3 eggs a day still
Guest
Last winter, our White Star laid pretty much every day, all through the winter. It may have been more sensible to replace her with another White Star when she died, but Bluebelles (despite their refusal to lay in the winter) are just too gorgeous to pass up!
