BarbaraJ
As the kids get older they are never around much over christmas, working or with bf's and gf's. I'm off from the 24dec-4th jan and hubby off from 18dec-4th . Anyway we fancied having a day out between xmas and new year (not before way too busy for me) and have done Cambridge, Oxford and London (many times) but are looking for somewhere different or a town with something going on. Or something in London that doesn't involve tons of money. Have done the usual museums, aquarium, wheel, oxford street, covent garden. We don't mind walking. Doesn't have to be in London but preferablly 1-11/2 hrs away. Anything near you thats special over christmas/new year? Or something in London i haven't heard about? Didnt really get to see the stalls through lack of time and yucky weather so may try again
patsylabrador
I wondered if you've been to the Museum of London, it's my favourite and has a few Christmas events - Victorian christmas and so on. It's such an atmospheric museum anyway with the Roman wall, and it's free. Also, lots of national trust places 'dress for christmas' and there's a few around London. kitchens
What about Rye, Winchelsea, Camber, Dungeness. We love it. We live in Kent and it's about an hours drive from us. We visit quite alot as it's our sort of escape place. Fish and chips in The Pilot in Dungeness ... nothing better

bluekarin
What about Stratford Upon Avon? Its just over two hours from Hertfordshire (thats where you are isn't it?) Its a great place to visit - not been myself, but my parents went there for their 40th WA this year and they loved it. Lots of walking and some beautiful buildings to see. http://www.christmasinstratford.co.uk/

bluekarin
The British Museum is amazing, and has an incredible ceiling by Norman Foster (he who designed the gherkin).
