TheChookKeeper
We came home on Thursday to find Alice, our female Silver Appleyard dead in the pond We don't really know what happened - but she got stuck in there the other day, unable to get out, as the water level had dropped a few inches. Usually this doesn't cause her a problem (or any of hte others), but she is currently mid-moult, and has no wing feathers... meaning the flap she usually gives to get herself out was proving fruitless. I topped the pond up on Tuesday for her 'specially, but unfortunately, it must have dropped low enough for her to get stuck again I wouldn't have thought she drowned, more likely something to do with the cold I'd have thought? Either way, it was horrible - what made it worse, was that my sister came home at lunchtime and noticed the ducks were out and about, but didn't look at the pond - she feels awful, unsure if whether she'd looked, she might have been able to help her in time. It's such a shame, and, as you would expect, the worst job to have to "deal with" - not had a duck pass on until now - the couple of chickens I've had die over the last couple of years have looked a bit ill beforehand, and passed away quietly in their house... I just feel terrible, as it must have been such a horrible way for her to go

TheChookKeeper
Thank you everyone for your kind words. I've drained the pond down over the weekend, as the hose is all frozen up, so I can't fill it up, and certainly don't want anyone else getting stuck in there due to the lack of water. Gerald, Maggie and Jeremy (the remaining ducks) are NOT impressed at the lack of a pond... but it's for their own good! They're having to make do with the boring old drinker for the time being That said, they only come out of their house for about 20 minutes a day at present... they don't seem to like the deep snow very much! I can't say I blame them! RIP Alice
