Olly
We'll take it as the joke it was intended to be! No advice on quotes, but do shop around - a local firm may well be cheaper than one of the big concerns. What I wanted to add was that removal men are worth their weight in gold. Moving house is bad enough, but when they arrive - apart from requiring gallons of tea - everything suddenly becomes much easier! I have done DIY removals in the past, but the last two times I used professionals and it was wonderful. I'd never try and do it myself again, even with lots of willing friends, it's money well spent in my view. Also, consider getting them to do the packing if it's not too expensive - another job that you can well do without! They'll usually quote with/without. Daphne
Would 2nd what Olly said a million times - we had a man do the packing as well, joined by his mates towards the end and they did it so quickly and so professionally. They ask you if there's personal/precious stuff you want to do yourself as well, so there's no anxiety issues. The whole experience was a doddle. Valkyrie
Thirded! We did DIY twice, but never again. Last time we chose a local firm (we picked 3 - Pickfords being one of them and slightly more expensive). The local firm had been going for years and I have no complaints at all - heavily pregnant they did it all for me - so no worries. Been here a long time, but we moved from Ashford, Middlesex to here, so I guess the costs would be much more now. Ours was around £350 at the time. Shirl
We paid £1300 to move 20 miles down the road but that included packing 2 bedrooms and the kitchen. That price was for 3 trucks 1 large and 2 small. We got 2 quotes which were almost idential.
theherd123
Not a clue how much it would cost however we used Ryans Removals based at Olton near Solihull when we moved 5 years ago and they were brilliant. I would advise then to give them a ring for a quote.
Redwing
We moved October 2008 The distance was about 125 miles The cost for van and two men to load it (we packed the boxes) was £700 The house was a two bed terrace We paid an extra £300 to pay for the removal of some of our subtropical plants which were in pots up to 3ft across So 1K all in plus we tipped the chaps £50 each as they were fab The cheapest quote we had was about £500 but they wouldnt take the plants, most expensive was £1400 We went with an award winning local Bristol company on lots of recomendations and did not regret our choice
Couperwife
thanks for the advice Ive told mum and dad that they would benefit from someone packing for them they seemed rather pleased with this I got a quote from a local (to here) firm about a price and they said about £1100 including packing, but that is including packing, 200miles there, 200 miles back and an over night stay in Tamworth Ive also been quoted £1700 gosh isnt moving expensive cathy x
Cooks
having someone pack for them will be so much less stressful though wont it! I have decided that on these prices I wont be moving anywhere...
Daphne
I think from memory we paid about £800 to pack up and move a 3 bed semi and huge cellar and fully boarded attic room about 40 miles, and that was 5 years ago, so I don't think £1100 is bad. We used a local firm on recommendation of friends and I think that would be the key thing for me - either follow up references or ask people you trust for their recommendations. I would compromise on virtually anything else I could think of rather than have to pack up or self-remove again.
Couperwife
I know people that work at this firm - so, im happy with it. it will be the first time mum and dad have moved in 36 years - so I dont think its bad cathy x
