Debb11
Hi all Just acquired my 3 ex-batts yesterday, they are all a sorry state and thread bare (only to be expected) but i'm consernsed about their bare red bums and backs, is there anything i can put on it to help them heal, i've thought about the stockholm tar but read the reviews, i don't have any anti-peck spray, do i buy some or use something else any ideas welcome please Thanks Debb
wiganchooks
I think the famous "purple spray" is not just to deter pecking, but also helps with healing/anti-septic (I believe - somebody who knows more might correct me!). You can get it in any farm store, or often saddlery/equine places sell it. Seems to go under a range of names, it is essentially a solution of Gentian Violet. I used it liberally in the first few weeks of my ex-batts and apart from making them look bizarre it was great, no pecking, no infection. Edited - adding link to Gentian Violet - it is antibacterial/fungicidal. Others may have better suggestions to help with healing tho http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gentian_violet Edited January 11, 2010 by Guest
wiganchooks
Oh, and dowse them in diatom, or mite/louse powders as well in case some of the feather loss is due to them being host to creepy crawlies.
Plum
Tea tree cream helps sooth sore areas. Congratulations on taking them
Debb11
Thanks Plum and Wiganchooks for your advise, i had thought of tea tree, just have to find some cream and i'll also look for the "purple spray" as well. Would it be wise to wash their bums first lol, though i don't want to stress them even further, i even thought of sudocrem which is good for nappy rash, eczema, bed sores etc but will leave their bums white and don't know if poisonous to them or even give vaseline a try? Plum
If there is wounds with debris in it I would wash them. Sudocrem seems good, I used it on a prolapse and the skin around it which really helped. Vaseline will keep their skin protected but it might dry it
dancing cloud
Hi Debb and welcome to the wonderful world of ex batts Are their backs and bums red because they are sore, or are they red and blotchy-looking because they are bare and you can see blood vessels near the surface? My little bare-botties (totally naked ladies ) from last March had skin that looked red and blotchy, but this was not actually a sign anything was wrong and the blotchiness soon went away as they got healthier and feathered. Entirely agree with wiganchooks about potential crawlies too Do your little ones have names yet?
