Debb11
Hi all I am so glad that this snow has gone as i can now move my coop and run due to my poo caked grass, I've tried picking it up but it just gets trodden in by my ex-batts in the run and the Goldtops and bantam in the other, but them three are free to FR when ever they want unlike the batts who are at the point of being intruded at mo as only getting them last Sunday. Now here is the question. Ive been reading what most of you use in your runs and coops etc i.e Aubisose, wood chips, easibed, hemcore etc and i am keen to try but i want to know if any of these materials is first put on polythene, black weed control or just straight on bare earth as i'm bothered about the dampness of the ground at the mo and don't want to make the stuff wet through soaking up ground dampness instead of chicken dampness and mess. Im just want some thing that is easier and less messy that poo caked grass and having to hose the grass down each time. Secondly, i came back today and found blood on 2 of my battys above their beaks, one looking like a chunk had been taken out and some scratches on her comb, though not bad i checked all thinking that they had been fighting but the bits above the beaks were the only thing injured, i came to the conclusion after watching them rub their faces across the mesh on the run that they had hurt them selves that way because they could see the other three and keen to get out or it could have been one of the others i.e the new discovered cockerel had done it when having their face up at the mesh , still keen to get out! would it be advisable to get some of that purple spray for injuries? Thanks All Debb
Patricia W
Hi Debb Yes, I should get some purple spray - but remember you can use food colouring in an emergency if it's to disguise the colour of blood. My Pets at Home had purple spray last week. As for the run, I have aubiose on bare earth, but I put Stalosan F down first to kill off bugs and my run is covered. I think it's best to have it on a slabbed run, but that isn't possible for me at the moment. It really is great stuff - I'm a recent convert! Valkyrie
Mine occasionally get rose thorns scratching at them - I have wound powder to puff on - it stops the blood and is antiseptic too - they know the thorns are to be avoided, but every now and then someone gets a little too enthusiastic about the juicy morsels in the undergrowth.
