Devil Duck

Recommended Posts

I have a pair of mallards - had them since they were a few weeks old. They lived in perfect harmony with the goose and gander (same age) and the chickens. Suddenly, the drake and the gander started chasing the cockerel and pulling at his feathers, then they started on the hens so we moved them into a run on their own. They continue to pester them by padding up and down along the joint fence line, but do get bored after a while and leave them alone. Well this has worked really well, but now, would you believe, the drake is terrorising the gander!!!! He is just constantly chasing him and trying to peck him. They all sleep in the same house and that seems to work OK, but as soon as they are out it starts again. The goose doesn't have any problem at all. She just gets on with life, as does the duck. (Though having said that, the duck did chase the hens as well sometimes). Any ideas please :)

Perhaps they each need a few more lady friends?

Our drake was fine for over a year and then turned into the drake from hell - we did acquire some more girls but he was so horrible to one of them so he ended up in the freezer.

That could well be the answer, but I'm not sure I want any more of anything at the moment. :)

Funnily enough he is a lot better today. A really weird thing happened yesterday. He was chasing the gander and got a mouth full of feathers. The gander stopped running away and just stood still. The drake stopped as well. The gander then very gently lowered his neck and made a kind of loop just above the drake's head. He stayed like that for a few seconds and the drake didn't move, then they just both went off and there hasn't been a problem since. Really strange. The whole thing looked quite eery. Love to know what it meant.
