stehaggan
Just wondered how many chucks fit comfortably in an eglu cube with a huge walk in run and also what breeds? Thanks
figarogir1
A cube should take 10 hybrid size chooks - it is more dependant on the size of the run. If you have a large run you should be fine.
chick wiggle
I have 11 lf in mine plus one of the bantams when she feels like it. Twas their choice!
Egluntyne
I have 14 in mine. I put an Eglu in the WIR too, but they boycotted it, so I took it out to give them more floor space.
Daffodill
Sorry for the novice question but what is a WIR
stehaggan
It's ok I'm new to this too, I don't have any chucks yet but hopefully won't be long, it's a walk in run.
Daffodill
doh! I have 5 in mine and I went for most docile breeds Buff Orpingtons and Sussex and they are great together. Egg production is not a priority but the BOs do give me about 4 each a week. Mine don't tend to share the nest boxes so form a que when they all want to lay which may be a problem with more hens. Good luck choosing your chucks
JanTheDiver
I have six in a cube with the extended run, but they do have a large playpen to semi-FR as much as possible when I am at home (see my pics in the Gallery). They all seem to get on fine but if three are in the nest at the same time I do get a queue and a lot of noise from a couple of the girls that want to lay their eggs when there is no room Six just means that when they are shut in the cube run they have room to get away from each other if they want to. Hope this helps
chick wiggle
if the nest box issue becomes a problem and you have a WIR just make them another nest box, we did and they actually prefer it! We just used an old cupboard with divisions and put some black out curtain up to make it nice and dark for them.
cluckingmad
At max chook numbers, we had 10 in our cube inside the WIR and 3 in the eglu with the eglu run (however as of this week ALL girls are going into the big WIR together as they all run it together at night anyway!) poachedegg
We have 13 happily living in our Cube, however not all are laying.
quickcluck
I have 14 in mine including 3 orpidottes and a humongous Maran!! Their choice as there is also an eglu which they will happily lay in, but like to sleep together!
stehaggan
Great guys for the info, I think I'm going to order a couple of the varieties omlet sell to get ne going, are these good laying varieties dies anyone know?. I'm presuming the wir's have been made fox proof to leave them in it at night? Thanks
cluckingmad
Oh yes. We had two pepperpots and two gingernuts from omlet when we first started out and they're great little layers Our WIR was built by our neighbour who's a builder type, and we've got a flagstone base surrounded by a frame of concrete so Mr Fox can't dig through, and weldmesh attached to the wooden frame so he can't bite through either
stehaggan
Well I have no chickens yet and haven't Ordered my cube however I was driving today, saw some chickens in someones front garden So I stopped and looked up the drive and It was a cube, my first real life sighting and it looked a lot bigger than I thought. Apologies if it was your garden!! So I've just been to b and q bought a bit of wood to start making run panels then when it's well underway I'll order an orange cube!! Yes orange, anyone else have this colour? I'm very excited
chickyhazel
It might seem big when you first see it but it quickly seems much smaller and is QUICKER to clean than the smaller classic. We put all ours in the cube for the 1st time today which makes 10 in there... I hope they are ok
Space Chick
Run space is the issue with a cube, in a large WIR you can be more flexible. Currently I have 11 sleeping in my cube
stehaggan
im just having a look at what mesh to buy for it all.
stehaggan
Just to let u know, rang my brother (the joiner) this morning, I'd have to wait 2 months for him to make one not good, so I went to b and q bought all the wood and today I have succesfully made all the wooden frames for the run, 14 frames in total for a 3 meters wide by 4 meters long. Just need to treat it now and then get the weldmesh, put it up and then I will order my cubes and chickens woop 2 cuts and a blister on my hand bit will be well worth it in the end
