Barkisland
I like Teach yourself keeping poultry by Victoria Roberts. It's very easy to read and understand.
Sageandonion
Haynes Chickens Manual - very comprehensive and Celia Lewis -The Illustrated Guide to Chickens - for the very pretty pictures
gongladosh
heh, in the Haynes manual, the photo of the Sebright really does look like a person in a chicken suit!

Chortle Chook
My all time fav. book on chooks is Best Hens for You by Charlotte Popescu. The stories in it are so funny and it has more to say about the different characters of the various breeds than any other book I've read. Though if you are after a definitive guid to breed feather patterns or specific ailments this would not be for you. I also really liked the little book Henkeeping by Jane Eastoe. Sammiboo
My all time fav. book on chooks is Best Hens for You by Charlotte Popescu. The stories in it are so funny and it has more to say about the different characters of the various breeds than any other book I've read. ive got that im currently reading that at bath times ive also got "Hens in the garden eggs in the kitchen" by the same author. although i have read that yet. When i was bought the cube for my birthday a couple of weeks ago i was bought "beginners guide to chickens" by lee faber its been posted here on good reads.com I like the recipes at the end. I think i will be needing as many egg recipes as possible I did read some reviews on haynes manual but they were quite poor. I am interested in breeds, general upkeep and health issues mainly
coco
I've just got 'the complete encyclopedia of chickens by esther verhoef. It has a good section on chicken health and some unusual breeds and loads of colour photos.

Chortle Chook
I haven't tried it yet but this is down on my 'to be bought' list: 'Chickopedia Hens & Cockerels Facts & Fiction' by Charlotte Popescu. I have a hard time resisting adding a book or chickeny what not to my 'basket' when I order my Omlet chook food
chickanne
Lovely thread! I'm on the look out for a book that's more about hen behaviour, anatomy etc rather than hen keeping. Anybody got any suggestions?
Chortle Chook
"Hen and the art of chicken maintenance" by Martin Gurdon is good on chicken behaviour though not on anatomy. He says "This is a feather-clad soap opera of primal urges. Its pages are filled with absolute power, jealousy, fiercely protective mothers ...." It is all about his own chickens and is a good laugh too.
