cooker
I am very worried about soup... she was broody for 4 weeks, we 'dunked' her in water (worked a treat last year) then later that day, she developed a rasping, heavy breathing, we wee worried, after 4 days of he same I started her on baytrill....she was better after 2 doses...we stopped giving her baytrill as we were going away and our chicken sitter couldnt give it her and she was better after the two doses....she was better (100%) for 7 days, today, she wakes up, breathing problems are really bad again (she was fine last night!) she is really raspy and gasping for breath, no mucus/wet eyes/nostrils, poo is a little loose. It is really upseting to se her like this! she has spent today hunting for shade, she will eat/drink if I make it easy, but wont hunt it out. I have given her baytrill this mornig and this evening, tried to give her probiotic yoghurt but she wouldnt. If anyone has any possible diagnosis/other tratement options I would be really gratefull to hear! btw, she hasnt been broody for over a week now,and she laid her first egg after being broody this morning! sandyhas3chucks
Rachael breathing issues are very serious and she should be seen, diagnosed and prescribed correct meds by a vet. Chickens are JUST like other species human or animal and it is REALLY important to complete a full course of antibiotics or you make the bacteria stronger and immune. Please take her to a vet... cooker
complelty, it is AWFUL to see her struggling. No vets sunday, but wil see monday. I know not completing a course is tupid! it was done out of desparation, knowing it was two doses or nothing! thankyou rachel
Egluntyne
Not a good idea to give any antibiotics without the authorisation of a vet, as they may be past their use by date, and not the correct treatment. I'd keep her warm and get her to a vet as soon as you can for a diagnosis and treatment. It may well be that Baytril will be the drug prescribed, but your new prescription will be in date and prescribed for that particular hen. Christian
I agree that keeping her warm is a good idea. Hens use an awful about of energy to maintain their body temperature, so by keeping her warm, her body can concentrate on fighting whatever it is making her unwell. Hopefully the vet can help tomorrow. Good luck.
cooker
afraid she passed away in the night. I appreciate your comments about baytrill/vets, practically, i am not made of money, I took another hen to the vets 3 weeks ago, he prescribed them then and agreed to give me a spare course. rachel

I am now thinking mareks from reading all the wall posts, she did have uneven pupils, she'd had them for about 2 months, we just thought she had an eye problem, who knows! everyone else is ok, I just hope they stay like that!
