chunkdoobiest 0 Posted April 9, 2012 We were cleaning out the cube yesterday and my OH noticed one of the chicks had mites on her head around her ears, but not anyone else on her. We duly checked and treated the other girls but couldn't find any other signs. I'd already treated the cube with poultry shield by this stage, the next box with Diatom, and I've since added total Mite kill powder to all the cracks and gaps. But has anyone heard of a mite that seems to affect the head and ears only? Thanks Matt
Plum 97 Posted April 9, 2012 Yes ear mite different to red mite. I think frontline works probably not licensed for chickens, you can buy it at a chemist or vet.
SueChick 2 Posted April 9, 2012 Hi. Depluming mite likes the head but they are under the skin so you can't see them anyway. Are you sure they are mites and not lice? These are bigger and are easier to see? Either way, easiest way forward (believe me I've tried every avenue!) is to go the vets and get them to prescribe Imviromec Eprinex - it's very effective and clears up all mites even the tricky Northerrn Fowl mite. Good luck.

Good luck. Just in case you get stuck, that should read Ivomec Eprinex. Please bear in mind that while it's very effective, it isn't licensed for use on poultry in the UK, so your vet mightn't be prepared to prescribe it.
