Adding to my flock - how many in an Eglu?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I already have 4 lovely girls in my Cube who are now 18 months old and I want to add some more younger chooks to the flock. The main reason is that I want to have a continuous supply of eggs. With my original flock of 4 omlet girls - they all stopped laying at more or less the same time and then about 6 months later all died of old age within about 3 months of each other. :(

So, I have bought a 2nd hand Eglu and am ready to buy some new chooks.

My question is - how many can I comfortably house in the eglu for a few weeks during the introductory stage? I was thinking 2, but could I get away with 3? :D

Thanks

I think the run space is more of the issue but as you are just using it for introductions that may not be such an issue.

My three ex batts lived in an eglu and they seemed very happy.

In the past I have had four hybrids in an eglu before I got the cube, there seemed to be plenty of room in the eglu, they did have an extended run though.

An Eglu with 2m run is more than enough space for 3 hens.

I used to have 3 Ambers and 3 Pekins all in 1 Eglu.

They did FR all day which probably helped that, but I now have 3 pure breeds which stay in the Eglu and run permanently.

Ooooo - very eggcited now! Thanks for your replies - looks like we might be getting 3 new ladies then as we do have the eglu extended run and they will only be in it for a couple of weeks, as I'd like to take the introductions slowly.
