Record for oldest hybrid?

Recommended Posts

Ginger - one of my 3 original girls - is now 6 and is still laying, although it seems to take her longer and longer to recover from her pretty extensive annual autumn moult...... She's laying between 3 and 5 eggs a week just at the moment. How old is/was your oldest hen, and what's the oldest your girls were still laying? (I'm not necessarily expecting that Ginger is a record-breaker, but I'm just interested to know, as none of my other girls have lasted anywhere near as long....... :)

Tilly, one of my original Omlet girls is 7. She lays about 10 eggs a year! The eggs now have a very milky white :? , but they taste OK.She has also developed a massive spur on one of her legs. She has survived a past fox attack (unlike 2 of my poor girls last night :( ).

She is not really part of the pecking order, she just does her own thing, but she is teaching the younger girls what is good to eat!

Fifi, who was one of my earliest standard brown hens, got to the ripe old age of 7. She stopped laying at about 4 but would sometimes surprise us (and herself!) with the odd egg every now and again after that.

I bought my first Eglu in early 2006 and it was delivered with one Gingernut Ranger and two Miss Pepperpots. I still have one of the Pepperpots and she's looking great. We were told they were 20 weeks old when we had them so I reckon that makes her somewhere approaching 8 years old.

I love these threads about our amazing hybrid girls :D

By no means a record breaker, but my oldest hybrid, Bella is an ex bat who came to us in October 2009, so she must be somewhere approaching 5 1/2 years old. She still lays a few eggs per week which is amazing and still keeps the youngsters in line!

I think she is a very special hen and I dread the day when she goes to the big dust bath in the sky - I will cry buckets.

My mum has still got one of her black rocks, she had her as POL just before I got married which was 13th October 2001, she is still laying bot me and my sister are gobsmacked and my sister was pondering if dad had swapped her but he hasn't ! Mind you mums girls live the life of luxury (at times they are higher up the pecking order than Dad  )
