patsylabrador
I wish i'd known this before. Peel the onion but don't cut off the ends until all the onion is done. Then cut off the ends, cut in half if it's a biggun and put in bowl with 3 or 4 tbspns of water. Microwave for about 4 minutes. Then when it's cool enough you can chop it up. Still a bit fumey but nothing like when they are raw and it tasted quite sweet.
chickencam
I usually just let my eyes run at first this washes away the irritant.
Patricia W
I wear contact lenses which seem to act as a protective barrier. I remember being given the tip that you cut the root end off last as that's the bit which excudes the vapours which irritate some people. Geoid
My eyes dont water when I chop onions, yet my flatmate's did when he walked into the kitchen.
majorbloodnock
The most successful tip I've ever had for this is simply to suck a teaspoon whilst chopping the onion. It doesn't offer 100% immunity from tears, but is almost always effective. That said, I don't do it myself these days since I can chop them fairly quickly, hence bypassing the problem.
