Bondy
Hi all, I have got a little sablepoot (probably about 9months old) that hurt her leg a while ago, I thought it was just a sprain so let her rest it for a while but it has not improved at all. We took her to the vet on Tuesday and they said it is an Achilles injury with little chance of recovery. What I'm after is whether people think it is mean to let her live as she is and should I have her put down? She eats and drinks as normal and actually hops around fine on one leg. She is slightly more nervous than she used to be bit she was always a bit jumpy. The other two aren't pecking her at all but they've been together since I first bought them. The vet said it is my call as to whether I think she has a good enough quality of life. Any advice would be appreciated as my wife and I are tempted to let her live out her days until she is clearly unhappy but not sure if that is cruel in others eyes. Chickabee
Did the vet say she's in pain? Lots of ex bats are re homed with old injuries and they live out their lives happily
redsunset
Had to reply as I had a young Rhode rock who suddenly was on one leg a good few months back, I think early summer. I may have stood on her taking things out to a bbq, or may not as they gather at yoru feet and I was carrying a tray of food. Anyway she was lame for weeks, would NOT weight bear on that leg and on asking seasoned chicken keepers (locally) they said chickens can do ok on one leg?? I gave her a chance and very gradually she put a little weight on the leg bit by bit and is now totally fine on both legs. Don't give up yet is what I would say as she hopped along slowly to get her treats with the others (and much as it bothered me to see) I was determined to wait it out and so glad I did. In between she was quite happy on one leg and eating and drinking fine.
quickcluck
I have a sablepoot also who is the same age with a leg/tendon problem. Our vet has given her metacam for a few weeks and we've got her separate in a dog cage... she bares a little weight on her affected leg but she is definately in no pain.... he seems to think that she will be fine. The concensus is that perhaps she fell from a perch in the run and damaged it..... Hope yours sorts herself out soon....
paulad
I think you probably know your chuck well enough to know what is right for her Its sooooo nice to come on here though and get help and encouragement. I think if she is happy, eating and drinking then just see how it goes - if in a few weeks/months you think she is getting worse reassess the situation We have done that with a poorly hen before now - not a good outcome for us in the end - but a totally different problem - in the end we knew what was right and what was best for her. If shes happy enough - go with it xxx good luck xx
Bondy
Thanks all. I will go with it for now until it looks like she is deteriorating. We have been given metacam for 6 days too so will see of that makes any difference but the vet was pretty adamant that there wasn't much chance of improvment and he is usually spot on with chook diagnosis!
