Valkyrie
DD and her other half did indoor skydiving - it's a big fan that keeps you suspended in the air. Beanie it may have been a bit of an old disintegrated satellite re-entering the earth's atmosphere. We've had a few nights with Hercules planes throbbing across the valley! Always makes me smile. soapdragon
Oh yums! Congrats to all! I'd go right back to the newborn stage without a backward glance if only I could! Now you are Auntie Mullet!
patsylabrador
Congratulations 🎊 I think being an aunt and being a grandmother are nice jobs.
Beantree
Congratulations Mullethunter. I regularly write to my Aunt, because she hasn't got internet and telephoning England costs a fortune since Orange UK (now EE) raised the price of minutes in Europe by a whopping 900% ! New wildlife in the garden for 2019 are a Great Egret, a Marbled Newt (not sure why it is called that as it has a big red strip down its back) and last night a Salamander. The latter two are a surprise. We are a long way from any watercourse for a newt, so how and why it found its way onto the front doorstep (and avoided being stepped on) I don't know. Whilst we had Salamanders in the Dordogne, the land here is generally hard dry clay which they couldn't dig into. However there is one spot that, at the moment, stays permanently soft with rainwater runoff from the barn. Noticed several holes in the area and just thought it was a mole, but it was between the holes the creature was spotted, by the dog on her way out for 1's and 2's. Fortunately she didn't eat it! See what 2020 brings.
mullethunter
Thankyou all. Have met and cuddled him now and he is adorable and SOOOO tiny!
Daphne
Sorry, I have been a bit slow on the uptake, congratulations! Last year I became a great aunt, which makes me feel about 100! We have found 3 dead salamanders on the road past our house. Its all the more surprising as we really don't get much traffic, maybe 20 vehicles a day tops. In fact the next hamlet is only 1 km away and our neighbour opposite memorably said 'Oh I haven't been there for years' which still makes us chortle.
Beantree
That's a co-incidence Daphne, on two counts. Firstly the Salamanders in the Dordogne were also dead on a track which saw perhaps 3 vehicles a day. Secondly I used to work in the Black Country in an area known as Brierly Hill. Mentioned to someone local who I worked with that I had been to Lye Cross at lunchtime, an old village just a mile away. "Oh, I've never been there" he said! Patricia W
Having said that, I’ve lived in my county for 40 years and yesterday went to a village just off the main road, that I’d never been too before!
patsylabrador
Because we use Google maps most journeys now we are finding routes around that we never did before. We're always saying "oh, I didn't know this was here!"
soapdragon
OH played the cello when (much) younger even joining a chamber group at college. However, life intervened and the aforementioned cello has been sitting, in it's grotty case, in the corner of the bedroom for years and years and years gathering cobwebs and dust. When we redecorated the room over the summer I rather put my foot down and said that it was taking up space and, if not played, should go to someone who would appreciate it. Very long story short (you'll be pleased to hear !) it's up for auction this afternoon in a specialist musical instrument sale. We've registered to watch live - it will be much later today - really looking forward to the thrill of it (hopefully!) There is already an 'absentee bid' for £50 under lowest estimate so we are hopeful.........it's a bit like one of those tellie shows without Paul Martin! Can't wait for the actual bidding - really hope there is some 🤪. Anyone else done similar?
soapdragon
Wow - THE most tense and exciting few seconds as the bids went up....and up! OH and I clutching each others arms and then dancing around the kitchen! Not a huge amount at all but still £500 over the top estimate and so very unexpected. It will pay the unexpected tax bill OH got two weeks ago and fund the new oven that we've just had to order (BAD time of year for that sort of thing!) We've worked out that the auctioneers take about 20% including VAT for selling and insurance but, on the upside, I get the clear space in the bedroom too so a Win/Win situation. Phew! I need a sit down and a glass of something!
Daphne
Well done! I have put a few things into auction before, and just sat back and collected the cheque at home, with no excitements at all, but nothing of any value. Although the first time I did it was a house clearance for a relative and the auctioneer told me to put a broken Worcester pot into the auction (literally in about 4 pieces) and it fetched £200, I was amazed! Its great to know you can put the money towards something necessary/useful, its sounds as though it was a really timely sale and a great 'swap'.
