mullethunter
First day I’ve felt cold in a while. 5 degrees with rain on and off and grey. Again.
soapdragon
Our Oxford forecast is -7 tonight! Haven't felt warm all day, even after 20 mins on the stepper! My Reynaud's is playing up miserably and, even with two pairs of gloves, most of my fingers were white after school pick up this afternoon and I couldn't feel my toes. How I whinged about the heatwave over the summer - there's just no pleasing some people!

There are some quite small ones and you can usually re-use them by heating them in boiling water. It has been very cold today and I've shut my girls in tonight. I hope you don't get too chilly tomorrow.
mullethunter
For days when I have to be outside and standing still for a long time in the winter (fishing) I put ‘hand warmers’ in my boots. It actually works and is the only way I can stop my toes going numb / painful. Also unless I’m needing to wear wellies (for work) or smart shoes (pretty much never) in cold weather I live in Ugg type boots. I used to get chilblains every winter when I was at school and had to wear proper shoes, but I never do anymore. I have raynauds too - I find it’s brought on by nervous stress as much as cold. soapdragon
Thanks for the helpful advice, Peeps! I have used hand warmers but find that it makes driving difficult (I have an elderly car with a tempremental heating system!!) so go down the two glove route - bulky but generally workable! Apparently Viagra is the new treatment for Reynaud's.....I guess that makes sense, when you think about it!
Valkyrie
Luckily I haven't had the dreaded white fingers . . . yet. I keep my driving gloves indoors so that they aren't cold when I put them on and I get a little protection from the steering wheel and gear stick. Hope your gloves work - double-wise! A tad nippy and a lot frosty! Thankfully the wind has dropped. It wasn't pleasant yesterday, although it was dry. Even spotted some terrific meteors last night! Beautiful this morning but now clouded over. Summing up the energy to go outside to feed the birds.
mullethunter
I looked for meteors last night but too cloudy 😕 Not a bad day today - cold and a bit windy but actually dry enough to get some towels dry outside. Chickens enjoyed a rare day outdoors because I was working at home so I didn’t spread my cold germs to everyone at work. Supposed to be heavy rain all day tomorrow. soapdragon
Has been beautiful but bitingly cold today. However, the forecast herefor tomorrow is torrential rain from lunchtime onward - drat!
Valkyrie
Saturday morning - very pleasant but clouded over fast. Drove to our old road and it was the most abysmal journey with torrential rain, gusting winds and flooding all the way - near Yeovil the police were out in force as I can only think a car aquaplaned as it was in the outside lane facing the wrong way. Stonehenge another delay - yes people still tried to look through a deluge to see it. Stopped overnight and saw sunshine - quickly hazed over and by the time we reached Andover the rain started up again. Yuk yuk and double yuk - although the wind wasn't so bad and we almost saw some sun in the evening. At least it had stopped raining! This morning - lovely, a little cold, but not frosty and a teeny breeze - I can live with that!
Purplemaniacs
I thought I would put an update. Colder today, cloudy and a little light rain around lunchtime.
The Dogmother
It's been rather cold here all day and cloudy too. Not looking forward to the forecast, but I guess that we're due a cold snap.
mullethunter
Apart from the day after Boxing Day which was lovely and sunny (I went surfing for the first time in 2018!), the weather was meh all over the Christmas period. Still fairly grey but now getting cold too. Tbh I’m just glad everything’s drying out a bit.
Valkyrie
1st started off lovely - warm and sunny after a long spell of drab and drizzle and fog. Yesterday was sunny all day long and warm too but it started frosting over early. Today back to clouds but ooh cold! There is a little bowl of water near the house, in the sun (when it decided to show up late in the afternoon) yet it was freezing over! Had to get my mum's wrist warmers out again (well not hers - she knitted them for me). Methinks a cold one tonight, so OH started the fire and put the heating on. Valkyrie
Bit of an update - we've had dry weather almost every day since the 1st. We had one day of drizzle last week. We have had cold sessions and frost this morning. When we had frost before it thawed very fast but it's lingering today. One day was bitter and cloudy - but overall we've had a few lovely days. I was in my t-shirt (in the greenhouse) yesterday and while working have had to strip off to t-shirts again while trundling the wheelbarrow up and down! I have a Weather Watcher's 3 Year Log Book so I've been filling it in as best I can. Hard to do temperature because if I look on line it gives the temperature of the village down below and we know that we are a few degrees colder up here! My phone says zero and I know that isn't true - still thick frost! I shall have to look for weather stations methinks. I'm fine with the clouds - but today I had to look up and found "altostratus undulatus"!!! With lots of blue in between!
Beantree
Our previous owner left a maximum/ minimum thermometer Valkyrie and it's been very useful. Seems the temperature in the open barn reflects the forecast +2C and outside in the vegetable plot and the car parking it reflects the forecast -2C. Everywhere else is 'right'. But the forecast temperatures can sometimes be wildly inaccurate as the proximity of the Pyrenees can either protect us or work against us by up to 4C. mullethunter
Spent the last 2 days wading around up to waist depth in cold water (I did have a dry suit on) - brrrr. Nice and dry but brrr...
Valkyrie
Oooh brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! I used to have one in the greenhouse - min and max with a magnet to reset, Beany. I looked at the recorded temp at Exeter which was -3 so safe to say we were colder than that. Weather report changed it's mind and said snow - saw that this evening and nope, no snow here! LOL! Quite a nice day with a bit of a chill, but not that bad considering the time of year!
Valkyrie
6 degrees today - no frost but some drizzle on and off and a teensy bit of sunshine and blue sky in between the grey clouds. I'll be happy if that's the worst it gets!
ajm200
Snow.. second time in a week and at school run time again! That’ll be chaos on the roads then. I’m a soft Southener - we don’t do snow and definitely not snow that settles. Big proper snow flakes 🤗 5 mins and the grass is already going white. Snow day with the kids is forecast for tomorrow 👍
The Dogmother
I was up in Birmingham today - some wet snow and sleet on the journey back. It is trying to snow here in North Oxfordshire, but friends in The Chilterns have had a fair amount of snow
soapdragon
Heavy snow just south of Oxford.A nasty drive through the villages on the school run this afternoon and it just kept coming. About 2' in total but thawing slightly now. Not sure about the overnight forecast - depends on which one you look at. Both boys excited about a possible day off tomorrow......ES was really late home this afternoon as the school bus could only go at a crawl! Lewis
Hope Birmingham treated you well C It was -11oC here today, no snow fall but the few inches of settled snow we do have has turned rock solid and slippy now; bring back the crunchy powder stuff! The Dogmother
Yes thank Lewis, although I didn't see much as I was at a conference at the Motorbike Museum 😴zzzzz
mullethunter
Not really even that cold down here. Was supposed to be around 0 this morning but didn’t feel anywhere near that cold on my 07:15 walk to work this morning.
Patricia W
Nearly got snowed in today in a Village near Soapdragon! It suddenly came down and in half an hour had covered the car. Cleared it off and crawled to a more main road but cars slipping all over the place. Took me 2 hours to do a journey that normally takes 35 mins. It is forecast to freeze overnight so expect black ice in the morning. This is when I’m glad I’m retired! Staying in tomorrow and lighting the fire.... after I’ve fed the chooks and walked the dogs. Sorry, peeps, if you have to go out, but your time will come. Be careful wherever you are.
