Chickabee
Got 2 13 week Arauncanas. The breeder wasn't sure how to sex them and I'm not too good at it. He said the gold one was definitely a girl, so I took her. Then I chose the barred one. However I now think the gold one might be a boy. I'm adding one photo, but if you click on it you can see other photos on photobucket Thanks. Sonya Edited May 24, 2017 by Guest
Luvachicken
Both pretty but I have no idea on how to sex them, sorry. I did click through your photos though and found a very cute puppy and I think I spotted a little frizzle too
sjp
I think you could have a boy and a girl. the cuckoo/bared one I think is a girl going by the tail the gold one I'd expect to turn out to be the boy again going by the tail. I can't see the head gear good enough on either of them. I think by 14 -15 weeks the first adult tail feathers on the boy should start to be starting to show and He might not be far of his first try at crowing and he should start to redden up. The Dogmother
I agree - the red one looks like a boy to me. Araucanas are notoriously difficult to sex at an age when other breeds are apparent, then they suddenly develop and become obvious!
Chickabee
Thought so. His head gear has got slightly bigger and redder since the pictures and I think I heard him trying to crow this morning
Grandmashazzie
Oh dear, will you be able to keep him. I have silver laced Wyandotte bantam boy and he is heading for his second summer. I thought we would have complaints last summer about his crowing but so far so good.
Chickabee
I'm taking him back to the breeder to swap for a girl. He doesn't like to cull roo's, so the little lad should end up having a nice life
Chickabee
Breeder now ignoring me. What do I do? Shall I keep him and see how noisy he is? He's already upsetting one of my girls I know how to cull correctly, but wasn't expecting this. I've been had over. I could move him so he's with my braver girls, but that's nearer the house. Damn I think I know what the outcome will be, I've been so stupid
The Dogmother
The breeder is doing what some of them do - ignoring the issue as the last thing they need is an extra cockerel. I would email the breeder so that he has it in writing that you want to return the bird for swapping, then I would turn up unannounced to effect the return, and BE FIRM; you are within your rights to return the bird as it wasn't what you thought you were buying. Roughly where are you located? I know of someone in my area who may take him.
Chickabee
I'm in Brentwood Essex. I have emailed the breeder twice. Unfortunately he lives behind a gated area. He seemed so genuine, he had his little children with him.
Chickabee
I've kept him . He's so lovely. He's tame he free ranges and sleeps in the stable overnight. My girls hate him, but he manages to scoot around them. At the moment his crow sounds a bit like a hen announcing an egg with something stuck in her throat
sjp
I've kept him . My girls hate him, that's par for the course with young cockerels but it'll change once they've knocked some manners in to Him. My youngsters from last year hate the randy little sod that's in with them first thing of a morning but once they've had breakfast most of them think He's the best thing since sliced bread just
Lewis
It's bad of the breeder not to reply to your emails but if he said he wasn't definite on the sex of them you've been lucky to only get one boy. Glad to hear you're able to keep him. He'll soon fall into line and be charming the girls, we have a giant Naked Neck and some of the girls adore him ...others less so
Chickabee
Thing is lewis, he told me this one was definitely a girl. I chose the other one and would not have tried to take her back
