Foot and mouth

Recommended Posts

Prelims will be out in the morning but a definite answer takes a couple of days

Then they have to strain type it to see if it is the same one as before

In some respects that would be good as it was attenuated so it wouldn't spread easily :?

If it isn't the same one

Since the farmer only found the cow this morning, how can the tests come back so quickly?

Sad news anyhow. :(

Prelim test is a bit like a pregnancy test you get a line but they have to do a detailed ELISA to properly confirm it

The whole thing is just a mess and I suspect it's all to do with that faulty drain and the flooding at the lab. It was simple logic-fixing a drain is much easier than having to compensate for the loss of stock.

Not again  - I heard it while I was at work today.

We were just ready to take pigs to the abattoir last time - and we're ready to take another two now - I forgot to phone the abattoir yesterday

My goats were stranded in the middle of the restricted zone last time and I couldnt get them, was planning to collect them this Sunday now a movement ban in force!

Surely someone has done a naughty and moved some livestock sneakily?

Oh Lesley, dont know how you can cope with stressing over F&M and your poor piggies! ;( it'd break my heart!!!

Its terrible!

I dont know much about F & M but why do ALL animals have to be killed? Can it harm humans????

Sorry if i sound a right thicko/bimbo.

I hope everything turns out ok! xxxxx

It is so infectious FC that is why they kill everything that may have been in contact

In very rare cases it can cause a slight infection in humans but it is very minor and EXTREMELY RARE

There is a human disease called hand foot and mouth which is not related to the animal disease

Animal F&M causes vessicles (blisters) which rupture and become very sore which makes the animal lame and it also finds it difficult to eat so it will lose condition  They will get better but the damage done to the immune system makes them weak and vulnerable to other infections in the future

It is so infectious because the virus multiplies in the animals cells faster than the animal can make antibodies so the infection floods the body before the animal can mount a defense to tackle it

Most small children get hand, foot and mouth when they start at school or nursery. As Louise has said, it is not related at all and is a minor viral infection.
