sandyhas3chucks
Hope no one minds me trying this (YET AGAIN) in the clinic but with these watery poohs it's not just an egg question, and have since taken her to the vet. my softee layer is doing weird things we had a few thin shells... often she spends a real long time on a nest not even trying, started to wonder if she was going broody on top of it all. but seems healthy, takes ages if she does lay.been an hour on the nest and nothing.. out she pops happy as Larry! but.... there are an awful lot of liquid poohs most of the time. from her! should I be thinking abot a trip to the vet about now, has bokashi, not many treats she's a tad fussy actually, likes cheese best! just discovered live mealworms likes them. NOW THERE IS SOMETHING NEW OCCURING ALSO. Noticed Sunday 1st thing her crop was full, gave it a gentle massage as out her in run for the morning. By the eveninh it was still full, not hard. But by Mond Morning it was empty, so thought ok. Oddly after trip to the vets &BEFORE any treatment started, she laid the most enormous egg ever solid! thought wy hey great,,, that was last Thursday. I Batril started along with Avipro. as obligingly did a not so runny pooh in the vets & she said there was a lot of undigested food in it! Anyway a oft egg Sat morning, a wet mess Sunday, nothing at all Monday, . Here we are Tuesday 1t thing full crop. NBo egg, straining wet ones odd wet blobs, a stuck wet soggy eggshell pushed ot, still puffed up not looking best & 20 mins later a thin shelled broken egg obviously came out whilst ftrying to settle in a box to lay. She did eat bokashi last night which I thought would be good for the poohs.... but maybe not to be eaten before bed? PLease anyone. Oh And vet agreed she under weight. sandyhas3chucks
I forgot to say when crop is down & egg out, up to now she's been fine, but today she is not a happy girl!, I have her resting in cat basket in the warm, and she's not tried to eat except 2 grapes I tried as experiment. I won't give her antibiotic untill she loooks more comfortable. Also vet gave 0.7 ml baytril 2 x daily, other chooks 1ml once, & they were both bigger... thoughts please
Guest
sorry, I found it difficult to understand your posts but I think I got the gist??? Don't wait to give her the baytril, you should be dosing as per the vets instructions. We've had to give our chooks both liquid and tablet baytril. With the liquid baytril I dripped it onto some bread, let it soak in and put a bit of yoghurt on the bread to make it taste nice and my girls ate it okay. With the tablet, I made a little pocket in a sultana, popped the tablet in and squished the sultana closed and we had no problem feeding her a sultana. Try dosing the baytril with your girl's favourite food or get a syringe from the chemist/vet and gently syringe it into her beak, be careful not to get it onto her lungs. If you just hold her beak open and drip it in, she should swallow it herself. Lay off the treats until she's better, unless she's refusing to eat her mash/pellets. Try her with some mashed potato with tuna mashed it into it, that should put some weight on her. If in doubt, ring your vet.
sandyhas3chucks
Thanks Poet, seems like one thing after another with this girl. Best bit being as I said when one NOT on the way at least she doesn't seem sick! Sorry was perhaps unclear I didn't mean not NOT give the AB just waited till she was more comfortable, and on that day I had soft egg in bed, and the soft shell expelled hour or so later(Like large piece chewing gum )then approx 2 hours later after long time on the nest a thin but complete egg. then a whole day with none(good) & late morning 2 days later a lovely solid one.(which I will scramble for her tommorrow! The poohs are some & some still, (hope the AB will be working there just think she perhaps doesn't get enough mash due to the size & appetite of her froend(not nasty just big)need to build her up somehow without over treating(as you say!) I have been using the Avipro also, & sometimes can get cod liver oil in a bowl with something else. trouble is she likes best the things that would make her squittyapart from cheese & tuna. then there was the full crop 1st thing WITH the 2 eggs on the way & she didn't want to eat anything... I opt for the syringe as tried with her fav food & not always eat, at least the syringe I know she gets most if not all the dose. I think pills in grapes prob the easist, but not been offered it as yet. might ask next time... (hope never!) Wanted her tpo eat bokashi for the pooh, but keeping it away from her till this crop thing settles. It does go down later.. but I thought they were meant to be full at bed time & empty !st thing & twice now I have been able to see it hasn't, can't always see when in Eglu run! sandyhas3chucks
forgot to ask with the mashed potatoe & tuna(ta for the potatoe bit) how much should 1 chook eat in one go? perhaps in desert spoonfuls type of measurement. her pal would eat a whole tin I am sure given the opportunity! Guest
baytril in tablet form is much easier. Maybe ask your vet for tablets instead next time? I'd say 2 tablespoons full of mash and tuna and if she eats it all, try a bit more next time. You can always keep it in the fridge in some tupperware for a cple of days. Mix in some poultry spice too, to give her a boost. plain probiotic yoghurt is good for runny poos too.
sandyhas3chucks
thanks again poet . it's good to get an idea of what "should be", . Just found a post in the egg section ref that was really useful. I am now thinking & hoping (because its treatable) that the soft eggs were a result of her feeling under the weather due to an underlying infection(runny poohs). all things together not gaining and or losing weight? Soft eggs lots of drinking... runny poohs? runny poohs not absorbing nutition? Do you think? Will def ask for pills if need again.
