Hen-pecked

Recommended Posts

So - two weeks in and it's clear that there's a true hierachy already. I feel as though I should intervene when one of them gets none of the treats that I'm throwing out.

But - today - I figured out which of my three chickens is laying (and has been doing for the fortnight that we've had them) and it's the 'weakest' one in the pack. Will things even themselves out or even change when the others start laying?

Laying hens are often higher up the pecking order than non-layers, but not always. The order can change, but if she's the 'bottom' hen, and the only one laying, it's unlikely that the others will move down the order when they come into lay.

I wouldn't worry too much - it looks horrible to us, and if it was children in the playground you would intervene, but it's natural to hens. She probably does get some treats (use 'scatter' ones like seed or corn, then the other hens can't police them all) but even though she is at the back of the queue, she feels secure, not put-upon like we would do.

If I pick up one of the other hens, my Bluebelle will peck at me quite aggressively - she sees herself as their protector as well as their leader.
