First time introducing new chickens to old flock

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I know there are a lot of posts about introducing new chickens already and I have read them but I'm a nervous first time chicken owner so please bear with me. I dont have kids and have gone a bit chicken crazy this year so they are my babies 😍

I have 4 1-year old chickens: Large-ish (4kg) Amrock rooster & 3 ladies (Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Barnevelder)

I have the Eglu pro with run + 4m2 walk in run, I'm planning on adding another 2m2 (min) to the WIR this spring. They also have a 150m2 unsecured/supervised run that they spend 4-5hr in daily in nice weather, min 1hr in winter. I can also free range them completely in garden if needed. (~1200m2)

So first question is:

- How many chickens can I add with this setup? All the calculators etc Ive found for space needed seem to be aimed towards the American style coops instead of sleeping-only coops like the Eglus. And which breeds? Egg color etc doesn't matter to me much as long as their temperament matches the other girls, and they can handle the rooster's size. I was thinking 2-3 adults already but I can wait till I extend WIR if needed.

Also:

- What is the best way to introduce them? What I had in mind was:

Setup large dog kennel and/or run next to WIR. Put in new chickens with the old ones at night, seperate them first thing in the morning. Let new ones have free range time seperately than the old ones until I feel brave enough to let them free range in the unsecured run together. If the free ranging goes well, add new ones to the old run. What do you think?

Many thanks!
