I'm sure you will fall in love with them the moment you see them!

We started with 2 hens nearly 4 years ago now and we moved to a smallholding and had around 40 hens. We were on the list for some ex-batts, were really excited about it and looking forward to it. When we were told that we could go to the March 9 rescue.... all the doubts started to creep in......what if we couldn't cope with them, what if we weren't good enough, weren't able to care for them properly......

We collected 6 and, sadly, one died overnight. The other 5 have been a joy to look after! :D We've so enjoyed watching them take first hesitant steps out in the fresh air, watching them start to peck and scratch, watching them look at grass in bemusement..........

Their feathers are growing and they are looking really good now.

I love the idea of an egg basket but really don't need it for 2 hens!

What are you planning on doing with all the eggs?

I am soooo rubbish at doing these quotes! I have been doing weight watchers for about a year and half (lost 3.5 stones). Up until 3 weeks ago I was doing points but switched to core. On core we can eat as many eggs as we like! There are 5 in our house so if we all have egg and soldiers that is 9 eggs a morning. My little boy would happily live on boiled egg and soldiers if you let him. My husband said we ought to pop a sign in the window 'eggs for sale' but I don't think we will have any left to be honest! I am really enjoying frittata too and thats something that is free on core! Takes about 6-8 eggs a time too. Clare x

Hi glad you are going for it. We had ours all planed out cube ordered ex batts ordered. Then is all went wrong we got a phone call from the coordinator to tell us our hens needed collecting on the Sunday morning (this is Friday pm) Cube not due till the following Tuesday so Saturday a quick trip to the livestock supply shop then sat pm converting the garden into a makshift hen house for 2 days. The appinted day arrived up early :P clock ticking the appointed time arrived and passed :x the phone rang its omlet here we are are unable to deliver today it will now be Saturday Sorry.:evil::evil: Back to the shed more mod wire door etc. but the girls loved it roosting on the sheving and skratting about. Sat arrives the man from omlet arrives puts up the big Orrange Cube and delivers 4 extra girls 2 of each. Now all 10 are living the life of Riley in the cube they are all such charictors and nothing seems to get them down. I rush home from work every day to spend some quality time with them b4 it goes dark and the all clime the ladder to bed (not bad for the second night)

The morrel of this is that you will love having them and not get anything done when your at home with them.

DO'NT WORRY ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS A WEEK BEFORE COLLECTING THEM. This is normal because your thoughts move from delicious fantasy to practical reality. I'm sure that most people feel this way. I know I did. Plus the fact of the added responsibility of taking on ex bats. You are thinking, will I be able to cope? will their health improve?, Will I do them justice? Will they like me? All these questions bring us down to reality. The answer to all these questions are a very big YES. If you want hens to love and care for, then it WILL be alright. Your nice feelings will return later when you and they have settled in. It took me just over two weeks to get my lovely feelings back.....simply because I was so intent of doing everything right. Now, all our family, and especially me are enjoying them......and they love us too!
