As the saying goes: Be Prepared!

Recommended Posts

I wasn't. My Cube and Pepperpots were delivered on the 17th. Was told that it would be 2-4 weeks before I could expect any eggs. Since the hens had taken refuge initially in the nesting box (and read that some decide on it as preferred residence) I blocked it off with various clay and plastic pots (I only realised later that what other people were blocking off was the porthole and not the whole dern area!).

Tonight I went out pre-beddy byes and lo and behold saw not one but two eggs on the roosting bars1  One was a wee 35 g and the other was a 55 g torpedo!

Warning: Do not underestimate the capacity of your chooks to surprise you!

(The nesting box is now lined with newspaper with a layer of aubiose awaiting tomorrow. But....what will they think of next?!) Bless 'em!!!! :D

Wow maybe my blackrock will lay in a few weeks then - her comb is getting redder by the day. So I shouldn't have the footballs in the nesting box either then - I do take them out in the morning though - two girls were sleeping in the nest last night and I thought enough is enough

Andrea, I was totally surprised (and hope that you will be pleasantly surprised too).

When delivered, only one of the Pepperpots had a comb with any claim to being red. Two others were pale pink and the fourth was grey. Of the two that were initially pink, one became redder. I think you can guess who I think the girls who laid eggs today were. :D

Since they seem to lay in the morning, perhaps you should take out the footballs at night unless you wake at the crack of dawn (I don't!). :?

I am up to sort them out at 6.30am, so if they lay before that it is a problem. No-one was actually sleeping in the nesting box last night so maybe they have got the hint :D They were 18 weeks at the weekend so I guess I still have a few weeks but I do have a few pink combs that are becoming redder
